"mesothelioma" is incurabale and terminal.

In the Public UK system, people who are diagnosed with this disease do not receive expensive hopeless treatments.

In the Private US system that Jeremy beleives to be more effiecent and cost effective. A patient can recieve more than a million dollars worth of hopeless and useless, ineffective treatments.

Enduring all the unpleasant side effects of chemo theraphy and hospitalizations with out any measurable improvement in outcomes, and a significant deterioration in personal comfort.

<The adoption of private sector methods, including greater involvement of private operators in the delivery of public health service, should be encouraged to enhance productivity and improve access to quality hospital services at the least cost.>

Over the last few decades there has been greater involvement of private operators, in the operation of public hospitals. Many services are contracted out to "Private Contractors" and the recent debarcle involving the Royal North Shore Hospital and it's private contractor show that private sector methods can be extremely costly to the public sector hospitals.

I forgot to add that some doctors, for example intensivists and anaesthetist are forming consortiums, that effectively exclude competition and that if you are not part of the 'favoured group' you are effectively excluded from reaping the bounty that the private system offers.

If you ever wonder why your private health insurance is rising faster than the inflation rate.

It is because firstly specialist raise their rates faster than anyone else. Secondly it is because of 'value adding' or 'gold plating' your private health treatment that the only benefit for you is your premiums increase so your wallet is lighter and bank balance abit thinner.
