By Emily Burke, published 5/7/2012

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement is a good example of how democracy is sidelined in the ratification of treaties.

Education departments cost money. Health departments cost money. The entire apparatus of government costs money. It is a fair bet that all of the other social and democratic causes that Ms Burke supports (and whatever action should be taken to try and fix those issues) will also cost money.
We are fortunate at the moment that we have minerals to dig up and sell to pay for them; but that circumstance will not last forever. If we are to ensure a prosperous future, we must begin generating the ideas that will translate into the money that pays for everything else. This is the point that is often forgotten by the soothsayers of a new world order based around knowledge economies and the internet- if we want public education and public health services and public whatever else, those ideas will have to pay off. We are currently faced with a system of international law, and domestic law, not to mention political agitation, where these ideas do not pay.
We might be troubled by covenants and entanglements secretly arrived at, but the necessity of this treaty, and the legislation that will empower it, is beyond question. Trying to demonise the suggestion that Intellectual Property should pay dividends to the individuals and companies that generate that property is short sighted and, ultimately, damaging to the future prosperity of the nation. If the nation is investing funds into an education system meant to generate ideas, then those ideas need to help pay for that education system through the tax revenue that is generated by making Intellectual Property pay.
