Celebrating 50 years of indigenous voting : Comments

In 1962 the Commonwealth Electoral Act was amended to provide Indigenous peoples the right to vote in federal elections if they wished to enrol which was not compulsory.

Thank you Dr. Coghlan and Dr. Denton and On Line Opinion for raising awareness about the need for Australia to celebrate 50 years of indigenous voting. The AEC deserves praise for initiating the 2012 April National Indigenous Youth Parliament which should also be replicated in state parliaments. Young indigenous leaders should be welcomed into the parliament by PM Gillard, the Speaker of the Parliament and other key stakeholders from all the political parties. Educating young indigenous people on how to engage in the political process is an important part of the journey to social justice, inclusion and social impact.
