By Shakeel Bhatti, published 20/3/2012

In fighting climate change one of our tools is the conservation of the plants that produce our food.

A global seed bank has merit, but with friends like this who needs enemies?

It's got nothing to do with climate change and the merits are not increased by nonsense about fictional weather events or "silent killers".

This is a serious subject and warrants serious support, not discredited fear-mongering.

"According to a study published by FAO, Australia is highly dependent on foreign crops for the satisfaction of food needs."

Nope. We are a net producer of foods and most especially grains. We currently export about $43 billion in food stuffs and import about 6 billion through reciprocal trade agreements.

Cheryl - I think what the author means by that statement is that the original seeds for our food crops (wheat and so on) have been imported from elsewhere. Improved species have been devised elsewhere and brought here.. Hence the seed bank thing..

The point he's making isn't particularly useful or even surprising, although more could always be spent improving plant diversity in Aus, I guess..

Oh god, it is not just the universities led by the ANU, telling staff to fill the press with AGW misinformation.

The instruction has obviously gone out at the UN to promote the failing Global warning scam. Those in power at the UN can't believe their best chance of ripping billions off us are failing.

This sort of pot boiler AGW push, added into information on worthwhile projects, just downgrades the few good efforts undertaken by the organisation. They cut their own throats.

An interesting article degraded by reference to the the usual, mandatory, unreferenced tripe about 'global warming'! However, for submissions for funding to be accepted, leaving the section entitled 'global warming' blank, the submission would fail. As would promotion through the main stream media fail to get a mention. I know, having prepared a volume of funding submissions in the past.
Regulated mandatory biofuel additives sure don't assist in food security either.
As Hasbeen observes, why do they insist on shooting themselves in the foot with such monotonous regularity.

Actually Prompete (and others), the author does not mention 'global warming' or 'anthropogenic climate change' at all! Talk about message filtering.

The author does however mention 'climate change', without distinguishing between natural or not. Most sceptics I know will say the climate changes, that is its nature, and that we can merely adapt to it.

Well, this guy has been an active participant in exactly the sort of activities that the sceptics have always said should be happening, but you guys just have to have a whinge and say that even mentioning climate and its impact on agriculture somehow 'taints' whatever he has to say.

I give up, you guys are hopeless.

Good work Dr. Bhatti.
