Sort of but then again, maybe not.

The real issue here is some universities inability to manage themselves. They are like hungry chicks always with their mouths open.

Quite right though as per student numbers increases, it follows there will be more need for mental health services. The Fed Gov could start refund Lifeline!

If I can go off message for a minute. The Gillard plan to increase student participation at unis only has some modicum effect on the skills shortage. The problem is a shortage of skills in specific trades not white collar professions.

I would say that first of the bat that "mental health" is a confidential medical issue and oughtn't be discussed with unqualified practitioners.

Secondly, defining and being aware of exactly what constitutes a mental health issue needs to be taught by way of an overhauled high school curriculum, and perhaps even some puberty issues could begin at primary school, as the reality is that some mental health issues start at or around puberty and the 2 often go hand in hand.

It is often the case that people experiencing mental health issues have no insight into this fact, and why in part in the more serious conditions which produce hallucinations are often interpreted as supernatural, paranormal or otherwise bizarre.

Thus, first aid (including mental health awareness) should be expanded into the curriculum and I would also add something of the guvment/legal system, the value of money and what the point of studying is, visa vi independent living and a financial security solution.

..

More specifically, stress management, transparency in uni costs and an expanded array of internet based self help regimes would also be of assistance.

It goes without saying that uni is likely to increase stress levels in the majority of individuals thus potential students must be prepared in advance as to how to manage and dissipate this in order to retain peak health and stay productive.

It's obviously an issue which applies to all of us to some extent and that in no small part is why I advocate for an overhaul of the curriculum.
