Katrina crystallised New Orleans' problems, not created them.

New Orleans - yes, it had been planned(?) so that disaster was an eventual certainty.
Although the scale and severity might vary, the underlying planning(?) for the paths being taken by other cities is fundamentally the same: whether they be Mumbai, Singapore, or Brisbane/Perth/Melbourne/Sydney in Australia. Getting bigger is the underlying plan, at the expense of social cohesion and well-being. Increasing numbers are encouraged/demanded before present infrastructure is brought up to requirements. Building such future needs, prior to taking steps to increase the cities’ populations, does not accord with present political opportunists who depend upon campaign donations and media-friendliness emanating from self-serving conglomerates in the big end of town.

Yes colinset, because the Gina Rhineheart brand of "leadership" is all too common these days.
It's all about money and any reference to a common good is anathema.
I grew up in a culture where "common good" was common sense. Sadly I've watched as Australia evolves down the US path where psychopaths are untouchable so long as they are wealthy.
It was really sad to see how the US culture was shamed by the aftermath of Katrina..."the land of the free" caught torturing prisoners, kidnapping innocents, and finally letting an entire city go into anarchy at the first sign of a natural disaster. Clearly the ones authorising wasting $ billions overseas are aware of the crumbling nation...equally clearly they do not care! Haliburton profits are more important than a million poor people, some democracy!
