Many people live and belong here, but don't exercise the rights of citizenship.

diver dan,
I'd much rather have Bunnings running the public service than the lot we have now !
There certainly would be less misery.

Australia is in fact one of the most peaceful, tolerant, positive places on earth.
Senior citizen,
That's right. The question is why are so many of its inhabitants so hellbent on making it worse ?

Why people don't want citizenship:

The trauma of getting a residential visa is so great, so arduous, migrants don't want to have anything else to do with the department of immigration which they have to do to get citizenship.

There is a fee and examination including medical exam, interview and knowledge test for citizenship. This is after the daunting process of getting a residential visa.

Many people become Australian citizens now not because they want to be Australians but because they fear going through the visa application nightmare again and again. Subitting to a final indignity saves them pain later.

If the government was fair dinkum citizenship would automatically follow the expiry of a residential visa unless the visa holder had left the country.

Most people, including you Don, don't seem to understand the dreadful process the department of immigration forces on applicants for residency. It amounts to torture and I am not talking about refugees, they get hell, I'm talking about anyone applying for Australian residency.

One other thing, you won't find migrants complaining much about this abusive process because they fear the consequences. That speaks oceans about Australia.
