Well said John Pilger. We need honest journalists but the media conglomerates have bought their integrity.

With all the new presidential edicts by Bush/Obama we look like being victims of tyranny in the future. Then we will know how the Muslims feel.

The USA isn't a democracy. It's a Republic.
Strangely enough, despite being nominally constitutional monarchies, England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand all follow the republican model rather than a democratic one.
In a democracy, the people vote directly on executive matters; majority rule.
In a republic, the people get to vote for a representative, who then claims a 'mandate' to make decisions on his constituents' behalf -whether they like it or not. This system relies heavily (and sadly, quite successfully) on the constituents having short memories. Unpopular decisions are always made early in the term, popular ones just before election time.
The greatest weakness of the republican system is just how open it is to corruption; and the essential corruption doesn't even have to be hidden.
By allowing politicians to set their own payscales (or electing their minions to set their scales for them) we have allowed -indeed, forced- our politicians into the very highest tax brackets. In Australia, the top 5%. In the USA the vast majority of federal politicians are millionaires or multi millionaires, much of the wealth created by effectively insider trading.
Rather than government 'of the people', we have:
Government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich.
