Post War Sri Lanka Under the Rajapaksa: Reconciliation's Two Lost Years : Comments

By Stephen Keim and Roshan de Silva Wijeyeratne, published 16/9/2011

It is tempting for our government to accept the narrative that all is well in post-civil war Sri Lanka including for minorities such as the Tamil community.

Hasbeen, seriously? The Tamils were in Sri Lanka for over 2500 years, arguably before the Sinhalese even existed as an ethnic group. Bear in mind that the Sinhalese are the ethnic group that resulted from the combination of North Indian migrants and Tamil Buddhists.

Given that it took 2000 or so years for the 'ethnic' conflict your argument has little weight.

As somebody whose ancestry in Australia probably only stretches back 200 years your point on the Tamils is really silly.

Thanks for the proof David. As I said, without integration you have catastrophe.

Should guide us in getting rid of multiculturalism.

Ah Hasbeen, but what's wrong with the odd catastrophe if it staves off the boredom of living in a monocultural society?

And in any case I think you'll find that any monoculture will eventually split into vastly disparate factions - just you watch: turn our backs for a few hundred years and the Tasmanians will be out for our blood!!

What if we had multicultural integration? And if we're all multicultural does that make us a monoculture? Food for thought Hasbeen!

David Jennings is spot on. Yes, this is a good article.

All societies are "multicultural". The only monocultural society would be, for example, Australian indigenes prior to colonisation.

It is always amusing to read Australians railing against "multiculturalism" when Australia is entirely a product of waves of migrants.
