It was the last of the December sitting, it was awfully hot and the beer too cool to be left alone.
The policeman who noted the two pushing each other and being disorderly enough to be locked for the night took charge of the show.
The Park Street Police Station was just about a quarter of a mile away and its cell was ready.
Two or three ours after, their sanity restored, our heroes called for the man in charge of the station, disclosed their identities and told him that they had the power to hold Court anywhere any time.
The man had to agree.
In the improvised Court one of the two occupied the Bench and the other the Dock.
You are charged with being Drunk and disorderly. Guilty or not guilty?...Guilty!
Very well; you are fined ten Shillings.
The judge fined gets to the bench and the other to the dock and the same rigmarole.
You are charged with being Drunk and disorderly. Guilty or not guilty?...Guilty!
Very well Sir; you are fined five Pounds.
Out of the nick: “I fined you ten shillings. Why did you charge me five pounds?”
“It was too much”
