Uranium isn't a long term solution either. There are only several decades of supply left.

For political reasons uranium is not reprocessed after each use.
Only one percent of the energy is released on each pass through
the reactor.
With reprocessing there is enough uranium for a thousand years.
Thorium can be used instead of uranium for even more years.
