Not everything has a price, and that which doesn't can often be priceless.

Brian, I am not sure why you think that the doctor in the painting is receiving no payment for his services, but I am sure that he is not being remunerated to the current level. It is true that in days gone by specialists gave 'honorary' service in the great Public Hospitals but they all ran concurrently private practices where the fees were quite high and in no way state subsidised. Incidentally cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation, 'nose jobs' and the like are private commercial transactions – unlike say cosmetic surgery following burns or correction of birth defects: the taxpayer is not involved. I know two men in their forties who took their respective families to Paris for Xmas dinner! True, one was a doctor but the other was a tax accountant and financial advisor. Why are people here singling out doctors as opposed to bankers, developers, and other 'high flyers' ? The general tone of these comments surprises me as my own family doctor is a tower of strength when one is in trouble and he is a man who I truly admire and respect.
