How odd that Iran comes under the most scrutiny for human rights abuses,when dozens of countries have worse track records including Israel who are effecting genocide on the Palistiinians.

I think that is an unfair criticism of Iran. While not perfect, Iran is far better than many countries in that region of the world as far as womens rights are concerned. Women have high levels of education, employment and a birth rate comparable to Australia. While there are religious laws that govern clothing and behaviour, they also apply to men. While not perfect, engaging such nations in the issues of women's rights can only help to improve the situation.
Its all very well criticising Iran for human rights issues, but many of the nations we hold up as good examples of human rights do not stand up to scrutiny. The USA has the highest imprisonment rate in the world. If you are a black man in America and don't finish high school, you have a 69% percent chance of being incarcerated in yo9ur life. The Iranians don't imprison people at anywhere near this rate. Israel, which is held up as some beacon of human rights and democracy in the middle east continues with a 40 something year military occupation of the Palestinian people and their land. People who have few if any rights, regardless of gender.

While I am aware that the author (and some of the posters!) have another agenda in mind, I tend to partly agree with Rhys Jones.
If we have countries like Iran involved in a council on women's rights, then surely it can only serve to better inform them on these issues?

If they are part of a global discussion on women's rights (no matter what their religions or cultures are), then the Iranians would surely have to look harder at their own practices?
