By Joe Thomas, published 13/10/2010

Global health financing is increasingly considered to be on the cutting edge of global foreign policy. Australia must pay its fair share.

The question, most importantly, is not why we don't give our share for global health improvement. It has to be, why we allow health in Australia to descend to that of developing, poorer countries?

Specifically, look at the majority of Australia's indigenous people, possibly 70,000, and all of the severely mentally ill, some 550,000. Both these groups have a life expectancy 25 years lower than average and much higher physical illness rates.

Consider the 2010 Health Budgets of Indonesia and Australia. Both gave 2% of their health budget to the mentally ill. That appears to be far more derisory when it comes from Australia.

This bloke just wants us to pay his wages.

We could perhaps set up a condom factory, & send them millions of them.

Keep the money at home, & let them take responsibility for their own destiny.

I really am getting sick of being "responsible" for everyone else's problems. There is more than enough wealth in many third world countries to do their own thing, but they won't do that while we are silly enough to keep picking up the tab, & shoveling money into their elite's pockets.

Hasbeen, Well said. We tax payers are getting fed up scrapping our collective barrels, just to put food on the table, while our polies just have this 'open cheque book' when it comes to some foreign country that simply can't, or won't, do something about their out of control birth rates.

And as for indigenous health issues, two words come to mind in many cases.

Self induced!
