By Val Schefe, published 26/5/2010

Am I the only person in the universe to be regularly incensed by the shopping experience?

In a free society you are free to shop wherever you like for whatever reason. Nothing has changed.

I don't know how old you are but some of us remember what real service was like and many businesses lived by the adage of "a little bit for me a little bit for him" rather than "everything for me" when dealing within the business world. eg. in relation to farmers barely getting prices to cover the costs of production.

Don't lose too much sleep over our quaint ways, your mindset is still the majority.

At least we adults can see through the marketing, spin and pressure that corporations serve up to us. What about all the children who have no defenses to such brainwashing and sales teqhniques? And increasingly it is children that are the focus of marketing and advertising campaigns. Children of today dont hate shopping. They are already hooked. I feel sorry for them.

Why is it that no one connects the exultation of profits over all else as the cause of what is commonly known as Affluensa a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety, and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more. If profits are all that matters why is it so strange to see companies doing whatever it takes to achieve them? It will never change until the fundamental cause is removed. Capitalism. Dont go complaining when the system you support behaves exactly as it is supposed to.

*It will never change until the fundamental cause is removed. Capitalism.*

Ah Mikk, you remain totally confused about capitalism. Lots of
people, me included, support capitalism as an economic system,
but their lives are not dominated by always more.

What most people realise is that capitalism allows people to
innovate and gives people choices in their lives, about their
time, what they do and their money.

There is no better system, Govts can't run anything, it has been
proven time and time again.

But keep hating, you clearly get off on it.
