I’m not into conspiracy theories but I am into the analysis of available information. This tragedy does not (yet) conform to traditional acts of terror, it does however, have some correlation with 9/11 but MH 370 is unusual in many ways.

It was not destroyed, no one has yet claimed responsibility, it was flown with the “squawk” code transponder switched off, it appears to have avoided primary radar as much as possible, it seems to have been flown in recognized air corridors, seemingly to avoid interest from military radar and avoid collision, it’s apparent flight path took it over undeveloped countries (very low primary or military radar capabilities), and if it has landed it must have had a “friendly” reception. Any aircraft not identified with a valid Squawk would normally be challenged as a “hostile”.

It seems likely that this potential high jacking was not the “main event” because they didn’t destroy the aircraft, no demands have been made and no group has claimed responsibility.

This indicates that passengers were not the target, the aircraft was. A great deal of technical effort, pilot skill and navigational knowledge was expended to take the aircraft “somewhere” without detection.

If so, they now have a modern “commercial heavy” to play with. This could re emerge in any airlines livery, with modified and “valid” identification, long range capability and the ability to merge with regular “traffic”, at the very least being “plausible” for long enough to reach a target.

There are plenty of militant states between western Pakistan, through former Soviet states right through to Turkey. Some have a bone to pick with the Russian Republic, others with any nation in the West and many with Israel.

Are there enough clues in this event to indicate the prospect of the next large scale act of terror? And will our security services globally be as busy as I think they may be?

It did show up a clear flaw in the system, namely people could use stolen passports if the passports were reported as stolen that indicates there is no worldwide system in place that does anything.
Interpol does have something but obviously they do not share it with everyone.

Malaysia also said it was common for people to travel on such passports.

Now if a system is introduced whereby a central database of all passports is established that will possible stop that happening BUT it will be one massive way for governments to control people.

That database will have every place a person travels to and from and for how long.

They could do what the Americans are already doing putting people on "No fly lists".

So the question would be does the benefit outweigh the potential good?

Also it would if infiltrated allow people to know exactly who is on what plane at any given time just in case they wanted something like an accident to happen to that person, too bad if you are on the same plane.

Personally I think something is fishy with the whole story so far from the media, but remember who's side the MSM is on.

To date not a lot is clear about the whys and wherefores -- but one thing I noted was how quick my local ABC station was to cherrypick any report it could which discounted the possibility that those travelling on the stolen passports could be anything other than poor blameless "asylum seekers" "seeking a new life in Europe".

Philip, my understanding is that the register of stolen passporsts could have been used but Malaysia chose not to do so. I suspect a few choices they have mad in the past will be under review now.

Spindoc I've wondering some of the same things. I don't know that there is certainty that they got the aircraft safely to ground but given that no wreckage has yet been found in what I gather are very busy parts of the oceans it's looking more and more likely.

A very long range civilian passenger aircraft with a massive carrying capacity in the wrong hands presents a significant headache for defence forces. Shooting one down on the basis of doubt about identity is a less than palitable option. If nothing else just the fact that the plane is unaccounted for presents a big security headache.

Well, has anyone looked into how big this net of terrorism actually is ? All this airport security etc. is of no use if security personnel are part of the net. Governments can't do anything because the moment they know of a suspect the idiotic media will compromise all effors to fight terrorism. Perhaps if the media were a target things might improve.

Foxy I'm undecided if I want to wish that on them. I guess there is the hope that they maybe rescued. I'm assuming a that there are a relatively limited number of places one could both land and then hide a 777 which are not under Chinese or US control and I also assume both nations will be have the means to narrow the list down pretty quickly.

The fact that so many of the passengers are Chinese nationals becomes in itself a strategic nightmare for the US if they need to defend themselves against it with the possibility of passengers (hostages) on board.

The case for any sound hypothesis is not the case “for” it, it is the case against it. If the case has merit based on currently available information, then it is up to the case against it to prove it wrong. Based on my own analysis and the comments so far, it is looking difficult to dismantle this hypothesis.

@Foxy, the sad part of my speculation is that if I’m right that the passengers were not the target and it was the aircraft they were after, then the passengers are no longer a negotiable item and are expendable. God I hope I’m wrong. As we saw with one of the 9/11 aircraft, the passengers reacted to defend the target and it cost them their lives.

If the intention was to take the aircraft on for another 6 hours then the passengers would have to be “pacified”. We understand that calls to passengers’ mobiles went unanswered? Remember that 70% of passengers were Chinese, apart from possibly of outer Mongolian separatists, there seems little motivation to take on China. I doubt this was an act against China.

@ Phillip S and R0bert. Good points. The chances of taking control of a commercial airliner in the western world have been greatly diminished since 9/11, security upgrades have reduced this risk, but not the motivation. A developing nation with lower security capacity would be a much more attractive target. The latest revelations that one of the flight deck crew was a political activist strengthens my case. They definitely needed a compliant pilot.

S.E. Asia, Thailand in particular have a well developed market for stolen passports. In addition, Malaysian authorities have reportedly been lax in both border security (not checking passports against stolen database) and flight deck security, invitations to flight deck guests. Most other airlines now have “no entry” policies and secure flight deck access.

So if you wanted to take an aircraft you would pick an airline that gave you the “opportunity” through lax security, a pilot would have known this.

Leaving aside individual's usual squawking about terrorists the most plausible explanation is actions taken by one or more of the existing flight crew have resulted in what can only be called a likely tragedy. These are not unprecedented. Here are a couple of instances where pilot suicide was highly suspected though not proven.

Just reported - there are 634 runways in range where the plane could have landed.

The pilot suicide links you posted are possibilities but there are too many differences with known facts. In both cases you linked to, they just crashed the plane along its proscribed route, no switching off transponders, no taking different courses, no evasive maneuvers.

Your UK Daily Telegraph link offers the interesting possibility of ransom of both the plane and the passengers, landing safely and secretly to do this. This leaves the likes of Somalia as a prime candidate, this could explain the Southern Route but, could they have reached Africa in 6 or 7 hours? There are hundreds of airports in range but are other “friendlies” along such a route?

I’m dubious about media and “official” information. I checked the Air Corridor Maps and the four main corridors NNW are the ocean flight paths of OCEANA, FAR EAST, S.E. ASIA and INDIA. All route through the Bay of Bengal, West of Thailand and S.W of the Himalayas. Well away from Chinese radar and under cover of recognized airline corridors.

The last known location had MH 370 right on these Bay of Bengal corridors. The route reported by SKY News and The Australian are over Thailand and SE China, seems pointless if secrecy was a primary consideration?

Other than long haul overfly, this North Easterly route is used for the Singapore/Bangkok to Delhi flights. Well to the North East of MH370’s last known radar contact. Why swap to a land corridor from sea corridors, thus increasing the risk of detection?

Motivation and Purpose run counter to just crashing the plane. Why fly on for 6 hours just to do that?

Perhaps their primary target was Malaysia and they just stuffed up?

I am going to write about and partially reveal something that I have had knowledge of for over 30 years. If I would have revealed what I knew my father was working on while he was in the navy and immediately after his retirement, he would have gone to prison for life and my mother would have lost my father’s navy pension following his death. Like you all I have wondered what has happened.
Just one piece of information that I picked up from I think it was
the BBC was that the captain's wife and children left home the day before the plane went missing.
Has to be taken with a pinch of salt as time differences can confuse journalists.

Time to think of aircraft modifications;
When the ARCARS and beacon transmitters are turned off they should give
all the appearances of being off but they should continue to operate.
The beacon should set a bit to indicate that it has been turned "off".
Another VHF transmitter should be turned on to transmit encyphered
cockpit conversations.

These modifications would cost peanuts but should be kept secret as
much as possible.

I am also convinced now that this plane is not missing. I'd say it's being made ready for another grand show for those who refuse to wake up. They have had so many warnings yet refuse to take notice, now there's another lesson being prepared.

This is a particularly sad case, it is almost certain that the aircraft has crashed and finding the crash site is going to be incredibly difficult, and if the wreckage is not found we won't be able to determine the cause of the crash.

Terrorism makes no sense in this case, nor does suicide by one of the pilots, that just leaves us with pilot error or a malfunction of some sort.

You can't just hide a jet airliner on some out the way airstrip somewhere. The Americans claim their spy satellites are good enough to spot a single person on the ground never mind an aircraft with a 200 foot wing span.

Well I guess this thread was always going to invite a wide range of “solutions” to the missing flight MH 370.

We have many possible scenario’s, guilty parties, speculation and conspiracy theories.

There is always a danger that the absence of fact leaves a vacuum for conspiracy theories to fill, which I personally think are just pain lazy.

Any rational analysis has to first answer the question “what” happened? If we know what happened we can move to “who” might have been involved, then to “why” they might have done it and finally “how’” they might have done it.

Conspiracy theories just short circuit the analysis, in fact worse than that, they start with the answers before the questions have even been defined, that’s why I think they are lazy thinking.

So many of our posters seem to mix up “known facts” with “reports”. I start on the basis that nothing is believable but try to fit reports with a reasonable hypothesis. These are as stated previously:

Mechanical/structural failure leading to catastrophic failure
High jacking by terrorists to destroy the aircraft and kill the passengers.
High jacking to attack Malaysian interests.
High jacking to ransom passengers and the aircraft
High jacking to secure the aircraft for resale to, or use by terrorist interests.

The first seems to be excluded by the fact that the plane flew on for some six to eight hours.

The second seems also excluded because of evasive actions taken did not result in the immediate destruction of the aircraft, likewise no attack on Malaysian interests took place.

This leaves only the last two possibilities, ransom or just stealing the plane for later use.

The plane has failed to emerge after over a week, leaving two possibilities, that all objectives failed due to crashing in some location en route or, that the plane landed within 48 hours at a destination yet to be determined.

The reports from the Maldives might endorse the “Somali” option however, until and unless the aircraft is “found”, the world will live in fear of possibilities too horrendous to contemplate.

For the media it is one of those stories that keeps on giving. TV makes the news.

He was looking at one of the Andaman Islands — which is within the large swatch of the globe where the plane may have disappeared — when he spotted a 777 flying low to the ground.

Let me toss out a possible scenario here, one that fits all of the available information.

1. Israel either electronically hijacks Flight MH370, or bribes the pilot to fly the plane off course and wander around being picked up by military radar and seen by witnesses on the ground to make it obvious the plane was diverted and not the victim of a simple crash.

2. Then the real flight 370 is hidden or ditched someplace (like the South Indian Ocean) where it was not supposed to be found.

3. Israel has had an identical 777 in Malaysian livery since last November, plenty of time for any "special" modifications to be made to the plane, including the installation of remote controls and possibly a nuclear weapon.

4. The specific aircraft in Tel Aviv is a Boeing 777-2H6/ER, with an even longer range than the missing MH370 777-200ER.

5. The media keeps the story of MH370 constantly in front of everyone (even though they have nothing new to report) so that the image of a 777 in Malaysian livery is on everyone's mind.

6. Israel flies (by remote control) the second 777 non-stop from Tel Aviv towards an airport in a major US city. Because the plane is very large it is easy to see and recognize from the ground. On approach, the 777 veers off from the flight path and flies low over the target area to make sure it is spotted and recognized (mistakenly) as the missing Flight 370.

7. The Israeli 777 then activates its payload, possibly a nuclear weapon.

8. The corporate media blames Iran for the mushroom cloud. Or, if the 777 flies towards Washington DC, they might even try to frame Russia for it.

The plane does not even have to actually hit a target like DC or New York, but could be "intercepted", detonating the nuclear weapon high in the sky miles out to the Atlantic, making for great photos and videos but causing little real damage on the ground.

The co-pilot of missing flight MH370 made a call from his mobile phone while the aircraft flew low over the west coast of Malaysia, it was revealed today as the U.S. denied reports the plane landed at a military base on the remote island of Diego Garcia.

Investigators have learned that the call was made from Fariq Abdul Hamid's mobile phone as the Boeing 777 flew low near the island of Penang, on the north of Malaysia's west coast.

The New Straits Times reported the aircraft, with 239 people on board, was flying low enough for the nearest telecommunications tower to pick up Fariq's signal.

The call ended abrupty, however it has been learned that contact was definitely established with a telecommunications sub-station in Penang state.

Two Russian bombers which flew close to UK airspace have been chased away by an RAF jet fighter.

The aircraft, believed to be Tupolev 95s, were spotted off the coast of northeast Scotland.

They were turned away from Britain when an RAF Typhoon was scrambled from Leuchars airbase, near Dundee.

Crews stationed there are on standby to intercept unidentified aircraft at a moment's notice.

The incident comes amid heightened international tensions over the situation in Ukraine, following the annexation of Crimea by Russia last month.

(CNN) -- The Royal Dutch Air Force scrambled fighter jets on Monday to intercept a cargo plane that entered Dutch airspace without proper clearance as world leaders gathered in the Netherlands for a nuclear security summit.

The LAN Cargo Boeing 777 bound for Amsterdam from Miami "was diverted away" from Dutch airspace due to restrictions around the summit in The Hague, Edmund Messchaert, spokesman for the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice, told CNN.

Messchaert said Dutch F16 fighters followed protocol and escorted the plane to Germany without incident.

He said LAN Cargo apparently forgot to apply for permission to land or didn't know airspace restrictions were in place for the summit.

A statement from the hauler, based in Chile, confirmed Flight UC 1503 wasn't able to land in Amsterdam and was diverted to Frankfurt "because of an error in the special classification of the flight."

The plane was later permitted to continue to Amsterdam, the airline said.
