nowhere that I can remember, did he claim that no such thing as
Al Qaeda exists.

What he did explain was that many peoples perception was all wrong.
In Afghanistan you had a whole heap of extremist groups,often
squabbling and with little organisation between them. bin Laden
was the one person who had serious money, which made all the
difference, he got results because of it.

He thus became the pin up boy for all these groups, for their
idealism was the same, ie the overthrow of the West, based on
militant Islam of the Qutb school mainly.

So you need to see Al Qaeda more as a loosely organised franchise,
rather then one large organisation which is in any way well organised.

Al Qaeda is not a homogenous group. It is not have an org chart with tiered levels of management like other organisationss. It is fragmented and many groups have no resemeblance to Al Qaeda having developed their own offshoots and networks years ago.

You do have to wonder about some aspects of the national security agenda though, why was OBL's body buried at sea. The reason offered is to ensure his grave does not become a Shrine for martyrs. A Shrine does not need a body to make it a destination for martyrs. His death alone makes him a martyr, the burial place is insignificant. OBL's death will not change the nature of terrorism.

DNA tests prove it was OBL but we all know US administrations are not always full on with the truth.

Why did US officials (as now revealed by Wikileaks cables) report no knowledge of OBL for years to the public but CIA reports sightings of him at meetings and other venues for years.

At least in the West there is some effort in governance and accountability and the fact that whistleblowers do emerge from time to time means there is space for those revelations. Furthermore, there's not much scientific about the 'proof' you have provided over time that Bin Laden's posse couldn't carry out the September 11 attacks. It's all conjecture, really. Like the time you linked to the testimonies of some pilots who said there's no way an experienced pilot, let alone a hijacker, could steered the planes into the Twin Towers. Their testimony could not adequately rebut the much more likely proposition that planes DID hit the Twin Towers, and that people - experienced pilots or otherwise - steered them there.

You can make all sorts of condescending comments about those of us who are stupid enough to believe the 'obvious' lies, but the reality is that our threads of logic - unsullied by excessive reading of conspiracy theories - tend to lead to far more feasible conclusions than those you offer us. However, why do you take on board the impossibility of such a coup by a small group, but cannot take on board the improbability the potential for leaking and error in a greater conspiracy involving the US Government. Certainly there may have been knowledge as is mooted about Pearl Harbour.

I have read much of the 9/11 theories and there are some illogical conclusions in some of it albeit some good questions as well - that does not hold up the conspiracy theorists. One of the claims is the 'controlled explosion' theory but very few of them mention the presence of aviation fuel after the crash, broken gas lines and electrical cables - not difficult to see why there could be an explosion as a natural consequence of the crash.

You should read some of the 'debunking 9/11 conspiracy' sites as well Arjay.

The following is how one could easily jump to a conspiracy conclusion. In today's Canberra Times there was an article about the US incursion in Pakistan to kill OBL knowing that Wikileaks was soon going to release cables from Guantanamo where information was sourced about OBL's courier; and it was following that courier that led to discovery about OBL's whereabouts (apparently).

It could be interpreted two ways. First: the US wanted to hide the fact that they were aware of OBL's whereabouts for some time and were choosing to protect that location for all sorts of conspiratorial reasons, thus leading the mission to kill Osama bin Laden to stop 'him talking'.

The second interpretation could simply be knowing that Wikileaks cables were being published hastened plans to target OBL given the information, once revealed, would ruin future operations and opportunities. So Jeronimo proceeded despite the fragile relationship with Pakistan. The fragile and diplomatic tensions with Pakistan could be the main reason for failure to act before now.

Sometimes there are conspiracies, sometimes there is whitewash and cover ups to hide incompetence but all possibilities should be considered in the mix.

What is going on is that while the White House publicly discusses whether they should release a photo or not, they are "test marketing" fakes

I liked the pilot excuse as well. The fact is it is inexperienced pilots that would fly into a building and in this case the intent was to fly into the building, no real expertise really needed other than just aim and fly.

I have looked at some of thos CDs and some of the claims are illogical.

The 'Truth Movement' encourages people to think but they must also use that motto to entertain other possibilities for themselves. There is no point in arguing that X happened so it must have been because of Y when really it could be A, B or C or none of the above. It seems the 9/11 truth movement always jumps to the worst conclusion.

While I don't always have faith in governments and there is no doubt there are people within government agencies that cannot be trusted, people should be encouraged to scrutinise what is fed through the media but that is applicable for conspiracy theorists as well.

How could such a large conspiracy be managed without leaks and whistleblowers coming forward.

Strange ... I always thought WW1 started as a result of the absurd 'blank cheque agreements' that forced nations like Britain, Russia and Germany to take sides in a minor scuffle between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Serbia. The Lusitania was sunk well after the war began, and not in German territory (unless the Germans had a territorial claim to the Irish/Celtic Seas, which would be a bit odd). That very generous warning from the Germans came in the form of a naval exclusion zone, with the Germans marking all of the waters around Britain as a war zone. In an age before airliners and cargo planes, I don't really see much choice for the poms to heed this warning without cutting themselves off from the world in a time of war. Certainly it didn't help that the Lusitania remained on the reserve list for the Royal Navy and, goven that it was carrying munitions, could arguably have been fair game. I'm not sure what versions of history you read, but I'd recommend you throw them out before they confuse you further.

On second thoughts, don't throw them out. They give you wonderful opportunities, which you have taken up in this thread. You have taught us that:

1) There is no such thing as Al Qaeda.
2) Osama bin Laden is not dead.
3) World War 1 didn't start in 1914 as we had thought, but started in 1915 as part of an elaborate British plot.

I give you a hard time here because I think a lot of your assertions are a little absurd, but you're certainly right to voice what you think.

As for the Lusitania, at least you raised something refreshingly new and under-discussed. Whether or not the poms wanted it sunk is an interesting question. It was carrying munitions, it was listed as a potential warship, details for its protection were bungled in Pythonesque style ... they might as well have painted a target on it. It was a sitting duck, and certainly a very useful PR tool for the Brits. It also helped to lure the Americans into the war, though they dithered about for a couple of years before joining.

And bin Laden ... I don't believe that he has been long dead, and I don't think America will win any friends as details of his summary execution continue to emerge. I can't bring myself to say that ANYBODY - evil or otherwise - deserves to die, and I was a little sick in the stomach when I saw the headlines proclaiming that justice had been served. In a way, I think the whole War on Terror has been a terrible real-life reenactment of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and in Frankenstein I always felt a little sorry for the monster. Not even the Yanks deny that they contributed to the creation of this beast; they fuelled its hopes, dreams and revolutionary plans; then, when it was no longer of any use, they cut it off, allowed it to turn against them and sought to kill it.

I can't and don't intend to condone anything bin Laden and his followers have done. I will never say that the Americans deserved what they got way back in '01, and I can't say that I empathise or even sympathise with Al Qaeda. I can say, though, that it is my belief that nothing from the beginning to the end of this sorry saga has anything to do with justice, integrity or any of those values we in the West hold so proudly.
