Australia’s claimed reliance on the US’ nuclear arsenal hijacks any meaningful contribution to disarmament.

Austria is sorrounded by (next to) several members of the part nuclear defensive alliance NATO. This gives Austria extended nuclear deterrence, mainly provided by the US and UK. Hence Austria, to an extent, is a free rider with nuclear protection automatically provided to it by geographical association.

Australia is in a very different situation to Austria. Australia is out on an isolated geo-strategic limb so Australia needs to service the extended nuclear deterrence provided to it by the US.

This reality does not stop Australia from supporting the non-proliferation initiatives in the region that we often lead. The more countries that proliferate (acquire nuclear weapons) in our region the greater the danger to Australia. A disarmed North Korea and prevention of a nuclear armed South Korea, Japan or Taiwan are major objectives.

Nuclear disarmament is a crock, considering Iran's lunatic regime which, is moving in the opposite direction with the help of the amazingly dumb (or is he evil) Obama.
