Arguably 'total work' is connected with capitalism. As a system, capitalism depends upon constant expansion of markets in order to maintain (relative) stability.

Increased women's participation has increased women's independence - a good thing. But it was conceded in part because capitalism trumped patriarchy. (women's participation meant a growth in consumer markets; but also a growth in GDP; and hence the economic power of those advanced capitalist economies that underwent the transition)

But ironically this is largely being paid for through the exploitation of other women - in particular I refer to the exploitation of skilled women workers in child care.

Many women also turned to family for child care. BUT NOW the Abbott Neo-Cons are winding back subsidies for exploited (largely women) workers in areas like child care and aged care. AND crucially they are suggesting a retirement age of *70*. It is presumed future families will turn to commercial child care - but this is largely predicated on continued exploitation of child care workers.

Meanwhile penalty rates are under fire; while unpaid overtime is on the rise.

Increasingly capitalism itself survives through what this author calls 'total work' - something that flies in the face both of the past gains of labour; but also religious sensibilities that there must be a time for rest; and that some things are sacred - and not everything subordinated to 'commercial imperatives'.

In this those with spiritual/religious motivations, social justice motivations and/or both could well find common ground. But we will only be able to provide solutions if we are willing to be honest about capitalism. I am a liberal democrat, a Christian and a socialist - But I hope other Christians, for instance, will be open to what I have to say about capitalism.

And even if others are not ready for democratic socialism - even striving for a 'hybrid' system - could still mean a degree of social amelioration for those fallen victim to the dominant Ideology of endless growth regardless of personal or social cost.

I would love to give these shiny bums a few tools, a quarter acre, & some seed, & tell them to produce or starve. Then they might know what hard work really is. They would have no time for leisure activities, they would crave only sleep after a day's work. They would however have all the time they could use for contemplation. Nothing offers more scope for that than an endless repetitive mindless task, such as hoeing weeds.

Then he tells us to praise the Creator. Why? If there is such an entity our creation was done for it's amusement, not our betterment. I fail to see what is praiseworthy in that, unless it won a prize for creating a better zoo.

Actually I think Justine would be much better off, & probably happier, if we found some real work for him to do. All this gazing at his navel to produce articles like this can't be good for anyone.

It’s a strange attitude to work which sees it only as something that we need to get away from. Many people do have jobs which are little more than drudgery and that is a problem for society. This is changing and people are increasingly more engaged by their work. Many people have very fulfilling and exciting jobs and this should be the hope for all human beings. These people do not long for rest and relaxation but take it simply because those things are good in themselves – equally as rewarding as work. Life is made up of many and varied experiences which have the potential to give enjoyment and satisfaction. The aim should be to eradicate things like drudgery from society so that all can fulfil their right to happiness.

Such a goal is only hampered when religious people do not ‘pull their weight’. Religious people create an imaginary world where all drudgery is abolished, where work does not exist and where all injustices are righted by eternal reward or punishment. They have stopped trying to improve their own welfare and that of their fellow human beings by opting out of this world in favour of living in their imaginary one. Their focus is totally elsewhere whilst everyone else gets on with the business of improving society. They ride on the coat tails of such improvements but have done nothing except try and frustrate the efforts of those who live in the real world. Sure, they do their jobs because even those who live in imaginary worlds have to eat but they are unable to contribute much or to be creative when it comes to solving society’s problems.

Articles such as this one just try and re-enforce the kind of defeatism of medieval times and the hopelessness of societies which are trapped in third world poverty. It is no co-incidence that the most religious countries are the ones who are most underdeveloped. These people need hope and help in the real world not encouragement to throw up their hands in defeat.

Nature never meant humans to work as hard as they have had to over the last few millennia. Tribal and pre-recorded-history societies only worked a few hours a week to obtain the resources needed to stay alive. Much of the rest of their time was devoted to family, social interaction and spiritual pursuits.

Excessive work is the main feature of so-called advanced societies. These are characterised by an embedded hierarchical structure, often brutally enforced, in which the multitude is enslaved to maintain the parasitic comfort of a small few.

In feudal times, it was structured by a system of slavery based on indentured tenants working the lands of the nobility. With the Industrial Revolution, enslavement to the nobility gave way to enslavement to the industrialists and factory owners.

In the last hundred years, debt has been the main means of enslaving the populace and today's feudal nobility are the financiers and global corporations.

In all such societies, huge moral and spiritual weight is given to work as one's sole measure of worth - and conversely, an unwillingness to work is met with the highest moral outrage. Short of an apocalyptic cataclysm, this system will continue in some form or another. There's not much that can be done about it.

All we as individuals can do is to try to keep our debt and overheads as low as possible. The less you owe to anyone, the less opportunity the bastards have to enslave you.

Ah it is interesting isn't it, that at least one of the main churches expects it's clergy to work a 48 hour week in direct defiance of the ILO recommendations. It also calculates superannuation on the cash component of a stipend, ignoring the remaining parts of the Clergy "package," free rent, utilities and car allowance. (which don't apply if you are a clergy couple, only one set is paid.) No wonder so many clergy find themselves living on the edge, reliant on Locum work to eek out the pension before moving into a church run nursing home. It may sound bitter, but surely the labourer is worthy of his/her hire?

Love most people go to work because they have no idea how to support themselves if they didn't. If it was easier to support yourself with less work, most would do it. Western society is sliding into failure by trying to support those who want to avoid any work, even for themselves.

If you want to live in a cave, or a bark humpy, & think you could find or catch enough to eat, go for it. There are plenty of places where you can still do it, if you really want to. Do learn how to weave tight mats first. Like the people of the Sepik, you'll want lots of mats pulled over the end of your hollow log you sleep in, to avoid the biting insects. It is a simple fact that those places that support lots of natural food, also support lots of biting insects.

You could use a mosquito net, but hay, that would involve earning the money to pay for it. Not many employers in those subsistence suitable areas. Hell even those smelly people in Nimbin could only survive because we were silly enough to give them the dole, while they "subsisted".

The modern world requires thousands of people, with thousands of skills to work. You are depending on all those people, mostly employees for your existence, let alone comfort.

Best be thankful for your luck, being born into a functioning civilisation, even if it means you have to work to share it. Without it's support, I doubt you'd survive.

Such totally muddled thinking is standard fare for Christians these days. But this piece shows more than the usual level of confusion about what "people" think, and do.

Ummm.... would it not follow, that those industries would rapidly wither and die, if people were not being entertained? Or attending to their health? Or having time for recreation?

Seems entirely self-defeating to me.

Worship of God is indeed the best form of leisure, but it was unwise on the author's behalf to mention this on a general forum like this where many readers are either not religious or follow a religion which does not include the practice of worshipping God.

Instead, in order for religious people to have more time to worship God, everyone else should be helped out of the rat-race as well, then everyone can do with their spare time whatever they choose themselves.
