For such highly qualified men, I am surprised by such a juvenile response. Major negotiating gains are seldom made by two firm allies.
Labor is so scared of losing its more conservative working class voters that they are effectively mirroring the Libs policies on gay marriage etc. Tony Abbott might not be the flag bearer for gay rights, but his electorate is the single biggest obstacle to change, and TA has their ear. While they have maintained their dignity and had an opportunity to stick it to TA, they have squandered an opportunity that probably will not present itself again for a decade. I've got some troubling news for you Garry...
while some gullible, weak willed and spineless people have surcumbed to the pressure of the violent gay lobby in it's brutal activism toward the American Psychological Association...intimidating it into changing it's findings about homosexual orientation being a clinical developmental disorder...... Others of us.. are not. The research is there: http://www.narth.com/docs/normalization.html The factors that determined the decision of the APA to delete homosexuality from DSM-II were summarized as follows: 1. Gay activists had a profound influence on psychiatric thinking. 2. A sincere belief was held by liberal-minded and compassionate psychiatrists that listing homosexuality as a psychiatric disorder supported and reinforced prejudice against homosexuals. Removal of the term from the diagnostic manual was viewed as a humane, progressive act. 3. There was an acceptance of new criteria to define psychiatric conditions. Only those disorders that caused a patient to suffer or that resulted in adjustment problems were thought to be appropriate for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Notice point ONE.. now read this: INTIMIDATION. Led by radicals like Frank Kameny, same-gender sex activists attacked many psychiatrists publicly, as Newsweek describes, “But even more than the government, it is the psychiatrists who have experienced the full rage of the homosexual activists. Over the past two years, gay-lib organizations have repeatedly disrupted medical meetings, and three months ago—in the movements most aggressive demonstration so far—a group of 30 militants broke into a meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Washington, where they turned the staid proceedings into near chaos for twenty minutes. ‘We are here to denounce your authority to call us sick or mentally disordered,’ shouted the group’s leader, Dr. Franklin Kameny, while the 2,000 shocked psychiatrists looked on in disbelief. ‘For us, as homosexuals, your profession is the enemy incarnate. We demand that psychiatrists treat us as human beings, not as patients to be cured!’” (Newsweek, 8-23-71, p.47) So... it is NOT normal, and should not be accepted as such. Hey Al, in the interests of fair play, I felt it only right to point out some truths about your 'source' of the rubbish you spouted above.
"NARTH was founded in 1992 as a "non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the research, therapy and prevention of homosexuality." It currently consists of "more than 1,000 mental-health professionals...This number represents a small percentage of the total number of mental health professionals; the American Psychological Association alone has over 132,000 members...The vast majority of its members are believed to be from the conservative wings of Christianity and Judaism." http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_nart1.htm If Tony Abbott were also a mental health expert, I have no doubt at all that he would be a member of NARTH. Only in America! Posted by suzeonline, Friday, 28 January 2011 12:39:37 AM

A courageous and brave stand Al. Keep that flag fluttering! I’ll lay down my arms when the “sicko” gay mardi-gras is outlawed! What a huge embarrassment to Sydney and its residents it is! Posted by diver dan, Friday, 28 January 2011 6:12:59 AM

Garry, thanks for your expose of the real politics of TA. I would expect similar reports to yours, whenever he holds meetings with environmentalists, refugees, indiginous Australians and those wanting the right to die with dignity.
Abbott's mental filter seems to be political advantage first and foremost, followed closely by his neo-liberal values of industry self regulation, small government and pushing the conservative Christian agenda. He's close in rhetoric, to Sarah Palin. As an opposition shadow Minister he gave an impressive speech in Parkes in 2009 about bringing in much needed reform to fix our broken federal system, supporting abolition of the states. But as Opposition Leader he has provided no better vision than extending the tired, partisan policies of his hero John Howard. His pitch is clearly not winning hearts and minds. Abbott will be wiped out as leader in 2013 polls. Posted by Quick response, Friday, 28 January 2011 9:35:30 AM

The DSMs are determined by the American Psychiatric Association, not the Psychological one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disorders Claiming intimidation is the reason homosexuality is no longer listed in the recent versions of the DSM is a false claim, AGiR, and a violation of the 9th commandment. Al nee Boaz David and Diva Dan, did you read the URL posted by Shintaro, which is in the world media? As its because of unchristian comments
(that are also common to both of you) that this innocent man was brutally and violently murdered. Posted by Kipp, Friday, 28 January 2011 2:41:07 PM

@ ALGOREisRICH
Your beloved Narth "organisation" is simply a bunch of gay men pretending to be heterosexual. For instance one of Narths top advisors George Alan Rekers hired an openly gay male prostitute from rentboy.com to accompany him on a ten-day European vacation. Rekers explained that the companion had been brought on the vacation so that he could carry Reker's baggage. And yet Mr Rekers claims that being gay is a "psychological disorder" and a sin. George Alan Rekers is the perfect example of the self-hating gays who believe in Narth. Posted by jason84, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 12:47:14 AM

I have a personal objection to formalized filth: Especially when such is ably assisted in the overriding of public opinion by politicians. Australians display, where possible, traditional methods when attending to overt displays of public sexuality in all its forms; each method with a unique format, attendant to the particular circumstances; all exhibitionists should make themselves aware of this, for their own safety. Kipp:
I think Kipp, it is important to keep reality focused within the thread of history. A broader question regarding the death of Mr Kato is, did he die due to reckless endeavour or did he die due to high profiling his sexual “bent”? Homosexuals must soon begin to realise their cause is not universally popular, and resistance in all forms should be expected. Homosexuals have a responsibility to ensure their own safety, and not display reckless behaviour with the expectation that the UN charter of human rights will keep them safe, necessarily . Another yoke of myth the Homosexual lobby labour under is, the expectation that Christians will “lay down” over the issue of homosexuality. As we know, Christianity has a long and inglorious history of blood -shed, both dealt and received: Latest acts of blood-shed against homosexuals in Uganda prove the point Posted by diver dan, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 11:02:46 AM

At last, somone honest enough to admit that Christians are not as meek as they want everyone else to believe.

Shintaro:
“Gay bashing” was once a Saturday night sporting event for many Australians. I would consider Australia to be a more civilised nation than Uganda; but anti-gay sentiment has simply been suppressed here; not a secure method to fortify any long term future towards oppression is it, when one form of suppression is subdued by another as a replacement? I believe a call for caution is timely. Posted by diver dan, Wednesday, 2 February 2011 2:28:10 PM

It would appear to some on this thread, that human life has little meaning; unless its mine!!

Civilisation
Suppresses primitive urge To harm other folk That's why violence Is unacceptable in Society and Law Posted by Shintaro, Thursday, 3 February 2011 8:54:38 AM

Shintaro:
Violence and hate are the purist of human emotions; the perfect storm. To deny their outlet is foolish. No person or civilising “system” has ever been shown, in the long and tortured story of humanity, to successfully contain their fruits. As a most recent example, the twentieth century is rated the most violent in all of human history. Just maybe, the twenty first century will be the turn of Mother nature to display her chapter in the purity of violence. All well it is to work for peace, but peace is the “true” myth of all time; the foundation stone of religion; a promise fulfilled at death: Fantastically non-achievable. Wizen-up Shintaro! I'm quite glad I'm not as pure As the gay bashers Is dan saying that Violent and hateful acts Should be made legal? Posted by Shintaro, Thursday, 3 February 2011 3:31:47 PM

Shintaro:
Shintaro is a stranger to reality. Our Mr Kato from Uganda is a shining example of the impossibilities facing a successful prohibition of violence. Violence is punishable: So is Homosexuality in Uganda: Punishable with an act of violence, in the case of Mr Kato. Both Homosexuality and violence are free running human spirits, neither can be eliminated by legislation. In historic terms, is the traditional Saturday night recreational pursuit of gay bashing justifiable, who should say, because observation exposes a link between homosexuality and associated acts of violence, a question can be posed, why not outlaw both pursuits, to be fair? A move successfully eliminating homosexuality and violence, using your logic of eliminating one but not the other Shintaro. Posted by diver dan, Thursday, 3 February 2011 9:21:19 PM

In Tony Abbot we have a person who would not even have been aware of the East Sydney climate. As for something as important as Gay freedoms and equality, if it wasn't on the agenda for his regular meetings with Georgie Pell in fantasyland, then the subject would be completely out of his orbit.
Sadly, Abbott, regarded as being well schooled (but years of wasted religious study), is a grossly incapable leader, meandering around with his head on the clouds through which he may, on odd occasions, be able to recognise what it is he is seeing, but certainly not able to determine what it all means to the average person. Very poor comprehension. A joke in political circles, a leader by one vote on a hostile subject (a lot worse now) and as a Prime Minister he would make Australia a laughing stock around the globe.
Surrounded by his loyal buddies (with a desire to keep their seats) he flounders around with ill-considered half answers, a push bike and an empty look.
So the reality and justifiable concerns of the Gay world would not rank too highly, taking advice from the likes of Heffernan and the arch conservatives in his party, with little social conscience or understanding of real life, Gay expectations or fairness.
His background isolates him from such realities.
Because of Abbott, the compromised Gillard enjoys little real intelligent opposition, so we all live with the dismal reality of Federal Labor, every day. Gillard's failed policies by the score, left today, right tomorrow, no foreign affairs skills, disasters that have cost us multi-millions and a hopeless Prime Minister thanks to the Melbourne Zionists who are being repaid with Australia's vote at the UN to further their evil ambitions in the Middle East.
Quid pro quo! Who ever said that politics was honourable? But a foreign country?
Abbott purchased the wine, possibly all you will ever get from him.
So be thankful for small mercies.
