Our Undeserving Leaders

Ron Pike, retired “irrigation farmer” and water consultant – so not one of the elites – writes in Quadrant Online the day after Remembrance Day that our 'leaders' do not deserve the sacrifice made by the fallen we remember on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month every year (at least, some of us still do). He says, correctly, that both Liberal and Labor leaders insisted that “not a soul”in their parties “was at odds with the Constitution”, and when they found out that they were wrong, they professed 'ignorance' with “sincerity a used car salesman might envy”.

Ron thinks that politicians who signed false declarations in regard to Section 44 of our Constitution should “not be in parliament on the grounds of mental incapacity alone.”

Both Turnbull and Shorten have behaved with cowardice and shocking self-interest on this issue, so I agree with Ron: except I think he was a little hard on used car salesman.

Also in Quadrant Online, Peter O'Brien opines "... that Section 44's demands are not onerous if one is genuinely intent on serving the nation in its parliament". Which raises another question: are they wanting to serve the nation, or just themselves with a big fat salary and and perks.

Geoffrey Luck asks, in The Australian, whether it is "unreasonable to expect potential MPs to acquaint themselves with their own circumstances and rid themselves of dual citizenship as per the Australian Constitution.

O'Brien himself asks if it might be time for the Governor General to intervene, as he is permitted to do.

First I protest the title: politicians are not "Leaders", but scum-bag parasites.

A used card salesman hurts people - real people are defrauded and end up with a broken car and empty pockets.

But whom do these politicians hurt by having dual citizenship?

Of course, politicians hurt us all the time, that's their very nature, it runs in their veins, but there's no evidence that politicians with dual citizenship hurt us more than politicians without it.

«are they wanting to serve the nation, or just themselves with a big fat salary and and perks.»

None would be right, but for the ordinary person in the street, among the two, serving themselves with big fat salary and perks is the lesser evil. In fairy-tales where decent politicians exist, they ought to be serving the people who elected them.

Anyway, the current weakening of the constitution and the rule of law can only be a good thing. If anyone was hurt in the process then I would object to it, but as it stands nobody is and I hope they will crumble without a shot.
