As the mining boom busts the nuclear waste bonanza is part of PMs good idea nation. The crown-of-thorns and fertilisers are busting the Barrier Reef . Dredgers are busy investing silt in the Reef to grow the business and could easily add value with sweet , light plutonium . The sugar-cane waste nutrients will be up-graded to proton-phosphates and the starfish will glow green in the sunset. Tourists will gaze intoxicated at the swirling 2 headed fish and mushrooming clouds of radiant corals.

At least the science is genuine:
Synthesis and Characterization of Uranium(IV) Phosphate-Hydrogenphosphate Hydrate and Cerium(IV) Phosphate-Hydrogenphosphate Hydrate
Article in Journal of Solid State Chemistry 178(4):1054-1063 · April 2005

A new uranium (IV) phosphate of proposed formula U-2(PO4)(2)(HPO4H2O)-H-., i.e. uranium phosphate-hydrogen phosphate hydrate (UPHPH), was synthesized in autoclave and in polytetrafluoroethylene closed containers at 150 degrees C by three ways: from uranium (IV) hydrochloric Solution and phosphoric acid, from uranium dioxide and phosphoric acid and by transformation of the uranium hydrogenphosphate hydrate U(HPO4)(2)(.)nH(2)O. The new product appears similar to the previously published thorium phosphate-hydrogenphosphate hydrate Th-2(PO4)(2)(HPO4H2O)-H-. (TPHPH). From preliminary studies, it was found that UPHPH crystallizes in monoclinic system (a = 2.1148(7) nm.

Dear CHERFUL,

Some isotopes can last for billions of years.

Did you know there have been over 2,000 nuclear detonations?

We poor land locked creatures are being constantly bombarded by radiation. And if you're really unlucky you might get squashed by a meteor.

The proposed 'dump' is not actually a dump; it is a facility that would take a decade or more to build - well beneath the ground. It the operation would even have its own exclusive port to take in the waste. SA certainly needs the money.
