The most eloquent rebuttal of Samuel Huntington's thesis was written by the man soon to be the next US president.

Correct!

The dangerous clash isn't between civilizations mythical or otherwise.

Within nations such as ours can be seen similar clashes.

Our struggle against poverty, low literacy, and poor education, so often misrepresented as a struggle Aboriginal versus others - even in these forums.

Many are embracing opportunities available in our pluralist society, recognizing the opportunities available, how required are some basic skills, shared values, acceptances, tolerance, particularly towards others a little different.

These essential requirements for progress.

Against such tolerance are those seeking to "protect" to impose their narrow guidelines and goals (am reluctant to say values) on everyone around them, upon everyone they can.

Matters little whether such behavior from misguided idealism or merely short term profit from such imposition upon others, either as bad as the other.

oh darn running late again....

No no no. Irf, you never learn and you cant stop pretending there is no conflict with islam -- and of course, being from the "land of the pure" also known as Pakistan, you have to blame others for evil things Paki Muslims do. Why don't you read newspapers instead of islamist paki forums?

Lets look at what you wrote: "So where is the real clash? Obama says it is between "those who embrace our teeming, colliding, irksome diversity, while still insisting on a set of values that binds us together, and those who would seek, under whatever flag or slogan or sacred text, a certainty and simplification that justifies ".

First of all, Islamic values are NOT western values. We believe in freedom of speech, freedom of faith and equality. We believe in human rights. Islam has jihad, apostasy laws and sharia. Look at your islamic world and how it treats others and even its own citizens. Muslims do not embrace our values, much to the contrary.

The words "cruelty towards those not like us" would fit very well the actions of Muslims around the world. Everywhere Islam dominates it brings death, suffering and discrimination with it. Muslims are cruel to those that are not like them (non-Muslims)

Enough said.

Oh, by the way, it has been almost five years that I asked you here at OLO how Muslims could say "Praise be unto him" after the name of your dear prophet, knowing the evil deeds recorded about him in the Islamic traditions (hadith), written by Mohammud's own friends and followers. Of course, I guess that question is only relevant if one considers attacking villages and caravans, telling lies, plundering, murdering his opponents, enslaving men women and children, rape of captives, brutal torture, and so on to be evil.

You never answered the question. Look at what has happened in those years. Look at who is doing these vile things.

Yes, there is going to be conflict. There will be blood in the streets and you, by your denial, are working to make it happen. I blame Islam.

I wonder what IRFAN YUSUF makes of the attempts of various Muslim countries to impose blasphemy laws on the world.

Quote:

"....the world needs to stand up in opposition to a movement from Islamic countries to transform resolutions that declare the need to protect individual rights into resolutions protecting a collective right of Islam to violate individual rights."

Well, what about it Mr. YUSUF? Do you support laws that outlaw "defamation of religion?"
