Saving the Mary River : Comments

By Jenny Stewart, published 8/5/2008

If Peter Garrett went into politics to make a difference (and one assumes that he did) the Traveston Dam will be a crucial test of his determination.

Excellent article

Let’s see, we are going to get the biggest pulp mill in the world that nobody wants.
A desalination plant in Vic that most of us don’t want.
Dredging of Port Phillip Bay that nobody wanted.
A pipeline from the Goulburn River that nobody wants.
A new Coal power station in the Hunter Valley that nobody wants.
We are considering selling Uranium to India and Russia that nobody wants us to do.

Looks like you’ll get a Dam that you don’t want.
And Peter Garrett will tow the party line, how sad.

Thankyou for an excellent article. Thankyou especially for recognising the national significance of the issue. It was interesting to note your figure for rainwater tanks in Brisbane. At the time of the dam announcement, Brisbane had the lowest use of rainwater tanks of any capital city in Australia (only 4.8% cf Adelaide 37.7%.)

The fact that it has since moved to the highest, shows,I think, that Brisbanians realised this dam wasn't the answer to their problems and that rainwater tanks might be a big help. The water " crisis" has really come about from our total reliance on dams.

The Prime Minister recognises this in his "National Plan to solve the Water Crisis" posted on his website.

Water Minister Penny Wong certainly understood this in her address to the Australian Water Summit the other day.

“In our towns and cities, we must secure water supplies for current and future needs, including from a range of new sources that rely less on rainfall given the clear threat climate change poses to traditional water sources.”she said.

Both the PM and his water Minister espouse a policy that is highly commendable, very sensible and totally supportable. It would be totally tragic if it failed at its very first test.

While a "sellout performance" may have been an aspiration in Peter Garrett's former career, it's to be hoped that here he can make a "Watershed" decision.

Nikkii,
Because that's what people whose ego & not their conviction drives them into power do. Oh, & yes, most of them have had their egotistical aspirations approved by some University.
