Lennon's New Tasmania : Comments

By Peter Henning, published 14/4/2008

There is a political-corporate-union-business alliance in Tasmania that has given Gunns the green light for its pulp mill.

What Henning conveniently fails to mention in just another of his polemics on this topic, is that under the RPDC process, only the Premier had to make a decision. He did not have to refer the RPDC recommendations to Parliament.

Under Lennon's changes when Gunns pulled out, the Tasmanian Parliament, which is made up of elected representatives, elected under a democracy, had to make the decision on the pulp mill.

Henning and his minions don't like the pulp mill. Fair enough, but there are a lot of Tasmanians that do. And it is no use quibbling about the process when we had all our elected representatives, who were representing the will of the people, make the decision.

The recent Federal election was a great opportunity for Tasmanians and Australians to make the point about the pulp mill, especially as Bob Brown said any vote for Labour and Liberals was a vote for the pulp mill. Guess what, the electorate has spoken.

A lot of Tasmanians are sick of the likes of Henning et al purportedly representing most Tasmanians when they clearly don't. The fact that opponents of the pulp mill commission push-polling and invite celebrities who know nothing of the issue, to try and support their position, shows their desperation to enforce their minority will over the majority in an undemocratic fashion.

An article with a very strong argument. Convincing and galvanising.

To those who cite the recent Fed election as a example of how much Tas and Australians want the mill, maybe you should put that election into context... The pulp mill wasnt the only issue in the election, believe it or not. Many Australians were completely sick of Howard, and in their minds voted for Labour as a sure fire way of ridding them of him. I personally know many who voted as such. There were huge swings to the Greens in many Tasmanian seats, particularly near the mill. Convenient that you dont mention that.

Again i say Im ashamed to live in a nation where corruption (and destruction) such as in Tas exists and is supported. Shame on you Australia.
