What a load of nonsence this author is peddling. This migrant group you are speaking about are comming here to study IT skills to take back to India. The pay for it by driving cabs, security work and any other jobs that pays which is hardly skilled labour.

If you look at the public transport system here in Melbourne most of the employees are of indian decent and it doesn't take much skill to drive a tram or light rail. I respect these people for being hard working and law abiding people but then I am sure that anyone wanting to escape a third world economy would be.

Let the poms, canadians and others have them its to packed in this country already and we don't need anymore unskilled people.

You say that "one of the major factors affecting their attraction and retention is their belief that their culture will be understood, accepted and, even more importantly, to the greatest extent possible, maintained by their children", but surely there are some values held by migrants that are incompatible with Australian values. Female genital mutilation is a cultural practice in Africa but is quite abhorrent to us and we certainly do not want to accept it here. Some cultures have a very repressive attitude towards women and their role in society - do we want that to be accepted and maintained here? At our local primary school a 9 year old boy of Syrian origin used to berate his 5 year old sister for not making his lunch to his liking. You will probably be appalled by the interference in his 'cultural values', but he was told in no uncertain terms that in Australia it was far more appropriate for him to make her lunch. He is now at high skill and getting into trouble for abusing girls on the school bus. Meanwhile the second boy, who is still at primary school with his sister is developing an obsessively protective attitude to her, which may be culturally acceptable in the middle east but when taken to extremes can lead to ghastly outcomes like so-called 'honour' killings. Is that what we want?
In my experience the values of the Indian professional class are quite close to our own, and as this article shows, the differences are more a matter of nuance than substance. This is probably why they 'fit in' so well, and may be why they like to come here.
