Waiting for democracy : Comments

By Bashdar Ismaeel, published 30/1/2008

In spite of Bush's claim, Iraq may not be a different place from a year ago and the Sunni-led 'Awakening Councils' could be ticking time bombs.

Like to hear more from you, Bashdar, seeing that the global main media seems to be now captive to the growing corporate culture.

Though just ordinary honest persons, we did not come down in the last shower, as many of the reading public seem to be.

We first refer to Tony Blair, who in falling from Grace must be the prelude to so many high placed others still to follow, persons who think mostly about looking forward, but never much backward to learn the most important lessons from history, especially as concerns the Middle East since WW1.

Now to bring Iraq into the picture, because it was before the illegal attack on Iraq that Bush and his neo-Con cronies, aided by Blair and Howard, believed that with the US military-industrial power behind them, overthrowing Saddam would be a cakewalk, as it seemed to be after only three months, but with the Americans still there with a country near ruined and death at most doorsteps after four torrid years.

Despite the illegality of the attack, the greatest shame could be be the flying of the Enlightenment flag of Liberty, so much expressed by Bush and Blair as Democratic Freedom.

Certainly it is true of history that freedom has many faces – so such so in Iraq that we hear in a Washington Post report about a US gunship expected to attack the usual Sunni insurgents but instead dropping out doughboys and challenging Shia protective forces, whom US troops had originally landed in Iraq to save from Saddam’s Sunnis.

For one who spends time on Foreign Relations like a detective getting to the bottom of a case, that report from the Washington Post was enough, that Bush has really done the Dirty in Iraq, knowing that a US and possibly an Australian public has become so fed up with the mess in Iraq, that even a change, with Iran now the main nemesis, could be like a breath of fresh air.

Anyhow, praise to the Washington Post, only part of the global media with the guts to give the true picture.
