When it comes to campaign slander, the good old days weren't good.

The author is off by 4 years. Jefferson ran against Adams (and won) in 1800, not 1804. And yes, the campaign was as nasty and ad hominem as it is described.

Wasn't it Andrew Jackson who said "If someone cusses the President, all the President can do is cuss back, or go fishing".
