A beacon of hope: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights turns 70 : Comments

By Patricia Jenkings, published 12/12/2018

The Declaration empowers not just human rights advocates like myself, but all of us and we need to stand up for our rights and the rights of all peoples, both at home and abroad.

Dear Bazz,

You wrote;

“My goodness Patrica, I am sorry to inform you but the UNHCR as a UN
body is defunct. It is now managed and controlled by countries that
have not even signed the UN Human Rights Declaration, Treaty or
whatever it is called.
Not sure who is chair of the UNHCR at present, but recently it was
Saudi Arabia.
Frankly a person with diminished mental ability such as yourself,
check with the UNHCR....”

No, rather someone without the diminished capacity of yourself would not be confusing the UNHCR - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees with the United Nations Human Rights Council -UNCHR.

The United Nations Human Rights Council is not defunct and it is not controlled by countries that have not signed the Declaration of Human Rights.

Saudi Arabia's membership will finish in 2019 and Australia's in 2020.

You asserted; “Not sure who is chair of the UNHCR at present, but recently it was Saudi Arabia.”

No it wasn't, ever. The UNHCR does not of itself have a chair rather it has a president, the current one is Mr Vojislav Šuc of Slovenia. No Saudi person has ever been president.

Indeed Saudi Arabia did not really get 'elected' to the Council at all. It got there because there were only four nominees from the Asia group. If there had been any competition at all then it is unlikely they would have got a seat.

The UN members have the right to kick a country off the council but the US have played a very dead bat to the suggestion of turfing Saudi Arabia. Perhaps you might need a word with your mate Trump.
