ANU and Western civilisation course: time to punish unis that limit freedom of thought : Comments

By James Paterson, published 19/6/2018

The Australian National University's decision to cancel plans for a bachelor of Western civilisation has highlighted the rampant anti-Western bias that exists at many Australian universities.

Good on you, James. A welcome antidote to yesterday's anti-West diatribe. Universities need to be encouraged to mend their ways, and the only way to do that is to withhold funds. Not many taxpayers would be upset by that. They want autonomy: let that have on their own dollar.

Complaints loud due name: "Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation" ?

Change name to: "Ramsay Centre for Civilisation" will complaints fade ?

Complaints loud due significant contributions to our modern world from Western society ?

Complains loud due inadequate recognition of contributions to our modern world from other societies ?

Western society significantly contributed to things we today all benefit from.

We do need be honest to recognize and acknowledge contributions from other parts of the world.

Authors of conceptual changes, those who develop new things, may not ensure we all do benefit from them.

Adoption of changes often slower, more complicated.

Yet eventually, we mostly do benefit.

You can't drain a swamp unless you have a Trump. When my daughter graduated from anu Kim Beasley gave a speech at her graduation applauding the election of Rudd. The swamp has only got more filthy and muddier since. Just look at the abc.

Well, When we find one that actually does that for real!? Let's punish them.

Yes, the offer was generous, but came with enough strings and conditions to effectively limit freedom of thought! And freedom of patently biased commentators to promulgate risible rubbish like this less than well-argued article.

I've apparently nailed my colours to the wall by being critical of the "liberal" party proposing to privatize the ABC. And hand it to a foreigner like Murdoch? Were freedom of thought and BALANCE is definitely notable by its absence!

My beef with alleged young Liberals is in their haste to impose control over freedom of thought, by advocating for the privatization of our Aunty!

They handed a huge own goal to Labor. And just on the eve of several important byelections and a few months out from a general Federal election!

Possibly because they were advised by that paragon of self-indulgent stupidity, moribund mumbler, Hasbeen? A wind-driven weather vane. Whose mouth flaps the most vigorously whenever the wind blows from the west.

Who wanted to kick me in the guts for arguing against a privatized Aunty? As would any other fair dinkum country bumkin/country gentleman.

A few acres in suburbia and a horse doesn't make you country Has.

Ah ttbn if there's anything you hate its something you don't understand, the REAL threat to Free Speech & a lot of other thing we enjoy is the Liberal/National party Govt
And leading the charge is this illustrious IPA bludger,a man who like the rest of frauds the IPA call Fellows which is an oxymoron Paterson,
Free Speech really James the only free speech you & the rest of the Right wing Goons clustered around Abbott/Murdoch/IPA is yours.
The rest of us you & Trunble are legislating it away in the spurious name of National Security & helped by the ubiquitous Homeland security
Führer und Reichskanzler Dutton who like you James wont be happy till your spying on us 24/7 & don't say your not.
If you really want Free Speech why not start with the Defamation law,it is the most restrictive in the world, instead of trying to recreate the Stasi the sooner your Govt is gone the better off we will be

Oh the irony!
The IPA is supposed to champion unlimited free speech and is staunchly opposed to the censorship of any kind of philosophical discourse.

So here we have a former fellow or more correctly bloviating ignoramus seriously suggesting that any university that steps out of line, as defined by his right-thinking blowhards that infest the IPA swamp should be censored.

That strategy is now in full force in Turkey, where hundreds of teachers and academics have been jailed. It is also being demonstrated in Hungary with attempts by the new right-thinking government to shut down the Central European University.

I'm inclined to agree with the opposition to the proposed course. What possible value would it have as an “alone” subject. Nil to none I would say.

Somewhere near the value of a BA in how to tie a shoelace, by comparison to the practicality of a science degree.
