We, being the folk responsible for ensuring we, i.e. the rest of us are not exposed to any of it, be it Ebola, aids or anthrax. Or indeed the thousands of less lethal, animal transferred viruses, bird flu etc., now moving around a much, much smaller globe. Alan B.

"Interestingly enough the WHO announcement of "Disease X" appeared on the 100 year anniversary of the first cases of Spanish Flu that appeared at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1918"

More deliberate. The Spanish flu epidemic is the classic Disease X. It was influenza with completely new behaviour, being particularly virulent in healthy adults rather than children and old people.

No doubt there will be new pandemics. We will also be better prepared to manage these pandemics than in the past. One of the problems that will arise will be complacency. Past pandemics have fizzled out, so why should we worry about this new one?

An additional danger is the rise of non-medicine. The silliness of homeopaths heading to Liberia to treat patients with Ebola with their nonsense in 2014 is a classic example. These sorts of activities are likely to exacerbate pandemics by allowing faster spread.

Yes Agronomist, and a classic case where erroneous belief trumps the verifiable evidence based facts. Such as the errant nonsense that vaccinations can or do cause autism. XXX Alan B.
