How fact checking in a post truth age gets undone by An Inconvenient Truth

Context is everything. The world didn't have 7.4 billion people 110,000 years ago delicately poised on the edge of food shortages or economic collapse. Cave persons merely moved to a new area if things got tough, an option which is closing in recent times.

I agree that Gore and some of his Australian counterparts have made foolish predictions. Nonetheless in 2017 we had people on medical devices which failed in blackouts due to heatwaves. All the indications are that kind of problem could get worse therefore we should take it seriously.

Jacquie Lambie was essentially correct. The world has been a lot hotter and a lot colder over the millennia. Whether it was four degrees hotter 10,000 years ago or not, is irrelevant to that fact.

Tony Jones did not need a "fact checker" over Yassmin Abdel-Magied's claim that "Islam is the most feminine religion." A claim so absurd it has now made headlines around the world. Naturally, Tony Jones let that one pass. No matter how idiotic the claim, Islam gets a free pass from the ABC Soviet every time.

No sorry can't agree! And I like the lady! Yes it has been hotter, in fact some 90 million years ago around 5C hotter, according to the paleontological record. With no humans involved! We've only been on the scene some two million years.

Back then it was unprecedented volcanic activity adding Co2 to the atmosphere, and enough to raise ambient temperatures by an estimated 2C? Enough it would seem to melt the tundra, releasing millions of tons of methane and enough to raise Ambient temperatures by another 3C or in total, 5C. And enough it would seem to wipe out nearly all life on planet earth?

Even so, since the 70's, new records have been set with Co2 levels in uncharted territory and some of the hottest driest heatwaves in 150 years. And perhaps explained by cyclical factors, such as a waxing sun and an elliptical orbit. However, our sun is in a waning phase and since the mid seventies. (NASA)

During which time hotter than usual summers and freak summer storms rain events etc have occurred.

Moreover, an elliptical orbit would have been offset by a similar period of below average temperatures and few if any extreme weather events!

Hardly the case, just more extreme weather like 1 in 100 year rain events hitting us thrice in a single decade. With pasture inundation nearly wiping it out in the N.T. and heat records trending ever upward. Culminating in the hottest summer ever; and while our sun is in a waning (cooling) phase!

It might seem unfair, but the usual result of just opening your mouth to change socks? Or greeting carefully gathered factual data, with BS, simply abysmal and not what I thought Jacki stood for!

That said, the next election that counts will see me giving Jacki my first or second preference! I like a usually Forthright what you see is what you get, champion against injustice, but when she is wrong she needs fair dinkum friends who'll tell her so!

Preferably before she makes herself look like an overly aggressive idiot?

Good comments on 'Fact Checker'. And 'they, them or it' faulted Lambie for being 5,000 years out over 115,000 years!

Some 'inconvenient facts' about Gore's 'truths', too.

Why any clear thinking and reliably human centric politician such as Jacqui Lambie, would appear before such an orchestrated, worn-out, biased and hackneyed, green leaning propaganda event, to me is the leading question, not climate change.

That's a "fail" Jacqui Lambie.

If you wish to know the depth of the little human heart that beats away deep inside this gem of a politician, follow her FB a/c.

IIRC, Fact Checker seeks clarifications and sources as part of their processes. Without reading the particular Fact Check in detail, my point is that any such process, to be credible, must start with the original statement and its maker.

If not, then the fact checker is relying on a he-said-she-said scenario, which is precarious.

Why was no link to the relevant TC Fact Check provided?

Hopefully the ABC's about-time diminished budget won't retain a soft, wet, left, Tony Jones component.

Any one can ask TC to do some fact checking - https://theconversation.com/au/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=fact+checking

Fact checking is not an ABC initiative. TC readers were quite scathing about the way Q & A simply accepted as gospel whatever was said (one of the reasons I stopped watching). After about a year of exposing that quite often statements were factually incorrect Q & A enetered into some sort of partnership with TC but it is not up to Tony Jones to decide what will be fact checked.

Fact checking is not a threat - if anything Lambi's comment supported by the fact check https://theconversation.com/factcheck-qanda-was-it-four-degrees-hotter-110-000-years-ago-73045

Your other point that the claim that Muslims are feminists should have been fact checked confuses facts with opinions. One simply cannot fact check such statement - what do we mean by feminism? What would be the evidence to support such a statement? If even the Catholic Church can lay claims to being feminist then what hope do you have of fact checking this claim?

Fact checking doesn't prove everything under the sun, however common sense and a just touch of scientific literacy, will confirm planet earth is an ovoid orbiting around a sun currently in a waning phase, which as part of a normal cyclical series of events, would have heralded at the very least, a mini ice age!

Not extreme weather events rising heatwave trends culminating in the hottest summer on record! Yes there is something we as a species can do about it, but like our PM, would rather expend considerable energy pushing it uphill, to grasp defeat from the Jaws of victory the very next time we have an ever hotter more enduring drought, that turns the dams into little more than puddles that nothing can be pumped from, let alone unhill?

Rather than simply come to the inescapable conclusion that our energy crisis will only be solved, regardless of the vagaries of the weather, with the acceptance and rollout of a for peaceful purpose only, nuclear future!

Batteries? Yes and why not as an interim measure that'll take care of the surge related blackouts for the next decade?

What then, Peddle power? The return of coal fired, back to the future, steam engines? Well what else is a coal fired power station? Innovative lastest science?

Senator Lambie is not the problem, just the dunder heads making the decisions? And resolutely refusing point blank to fact check the irrefutable evidence that ought to impact those same decisions!
