Should public opinion determine policy? : Comments

By Max Atkinson, published 25/11/2016

A classic issue of political philosophy arises from the decision by the British Government to leave the European Union. The question is whether members of the UK Parliament have a duty to support the government by accepting the will of the people.

Should public opinion determine policy? What a daft, elitist questions. Of course it sbould! It is this sort of stupid question that gives politicians the idea that they are rulers, not servants. Except for very few areas in emergency situations, the people should be supreme.

Absolutely! And if you disagree, then you need to argue a case based on merit and the irrefutable overwhelming evidence! And take the people with you!

The elitist, we know best position, is what created Britex and the Trump phenomena!

Simply put, "Leaders" who refuse to either listen or persuade, soon become former or never ever run, tin ear Hasbeens!

Taxation without representation is tyranny! And to date, too much of the former and not enough of the latter!

We could/can do so much better!

I'll add to the shout it seems know that the public have had enough of the born to rule elitist on "both sides" of government.
Now that the two party system that has seen much of the western world stagnate since the 70's.
Our dear Polly's don't like democrazy anymore.John Majors pathetic comment about the tyranny of the majority shows just how corrupt and out of touch our poetical elite have become.

I don't care what your politics is but I would like everyone to vote for a minor party at every election. Make your vote count. Lets' get rid of the Nats, the Libs and Labour.

They will have to find some other way to line their pockets with our money.

Of course public opinion should determine policy. Well, at least when I agree with it.
