A letter to Adelaide's youth – stay or go? : Comments

By Malcolm King, published 10/11/2016

This makes you 'dangerous' because when you return – if you return and you should – you've acquired national or international standards.

Left Adelaide in the 80's, glad I did. It is a poseur with over-weaned moral tickets on itself; whereas it is a dying, irrelevant, country town.

PS: NO interconnect to NSW power.

Well there is a solution to Adelaide's current economic demise! But a nettle the administration is reluctant to grasp!

I've pulled quite a lot of nettle, to prevent it stinging the kids. The trick that prevents any pain is to grasp it quickly and firmly! Then rip it out.

Use it in tea as a herbal, that may ease a headache or period pains? My gran swore by it!

The economic nettle for Australia in general, is the need to end the control of our economy by fossil fuel companies? Quickly, firmly!

And that control is rendered asunder, when we grasp our nettle as CHEAP CLEAN SAFE nuclear energy! He who hesitates is lost!

S.A. can get up off the floor, by embracing cooperative capitalism! And that needs to be prospered by your government! It can't happen by itself! And won't happen if special interest groups are allowed to continue to prevent it, or worse destroy what remains?

Co-ops were the one free market private enterprise model that mostly survived the Great Depression, largely intact!

Imagine if a government sponsored and facilitated employee co-op built carbon fibre electric cars there to export to the world? Or subs, ships, planes trains or any energy dependant high tech merchandise? What prevents it?

Young people with good ideas, need a vehicle to allow them to manifest those ideas as our shared reality!

And none better on all counts, than cooperative capitalism!

As for finance? Popular overseas, but completely untried here, are self terminating 30 year bonds!

A government guarantee and tax free status, would ensure, even with a relatively modest return in the offing? We'd be all but trampled under in the rush to buy? Call it the three pronged trident plan? Energy enabled enterprise!

Or just stick with what has worked thus far? (Hell>handbasket!?) But just don't do something, stand there!

I went for a pub tea last night with an Adelaide Gen Xer. His job is fairly safe but he's not sure about his kids. Apparently many Safstrines now think the grass will be greener elsewhere. Homeboy Rupert Murdoch left Adelaide early on and hasn't looked back.

Aged care will be a huge industry in SA when all the Ten Pound Poms go into nursing homes. Trouble is many young people don't want to work in aged care. It is weird that the world is supposed to be crying out for low carbon electricity that SA can help provide, yet SA keeps missing the boat. All those people with their snug homes in the hills or south coast like things the way they are. Too bad about the young people.

Australia should follow the Chinese example, and take control of its currency. Like the US, Australia cannot compete with the innovation of production that creates jobs, when faced with a China that gives its middle finger to the rest of the world, who have stupidly floated their currency for target practice!
