By Zoe Stewart, published 11/5/2016

Since this federal government was elected, we have seen 14 people die from suicide, inappropriate or inadequate medical attention, and injuries sustained in detention.

I agree we have a duty of care to folks arriving here and claiming asylum. And that's assisted by transparent outcomes. As opposed to turning this issue and people into a political football? Well done!

We need to find an acceptable formula to resettle or repatriate these folk in a more timely and humane manner.

I've lived in tents and camped out for years; and had to rely on vastly more primitive amenities, and can attest, there are vastly worse outcomes!

That said given my druthers, I'd turn Nauru inside out and upside down, in a completely covert special forces exercise, hunting for, finding and identifying beyond any reasonable doubt (absolutely doable) the rapist that impregnated that poor desperate woman and castrate him as the only visible justice and a salutary lesson for him and any like minded animals!

And better use of them than invading the Tampa, packed with innocent women and children?

In retrospect, the vastly more humane Malaysia regional solution, looks very acceptable right now! And given it still breaks the people smugglers business model, ought to be revisited and renegotiated?

An acceptable formula is to prevent them drowning at sea and assist the most deserving by flying in real refugees. Opps, that's what we have now, why does Zoe want to start drowning them again?

Well done Zoe! It seems that you want hundreds of people drowned at sea and how will that sit with your Doctors Oath?
This article has every whiny, cry baby, left wing cause ever imagined.
Why did you study to be a Doctor when obviously all you want to be is a "Leader". Zoe no one is behind you sweetheart.

I have grave doubts that most of these people coming to Australia are genuine refugees or asylum seekers.

In my opinion they are correct title is Citzenship Demanders and they intend to settle for nothing less.

I do not believe all these people face imminent threats of torture and instant death if they went back to their own country. Some would simply because they have ripped off their own country and aided and abetted other countries and corporations to fleece their own country. I also suspect many of these people are the wealthy elite from their own country who run simply because they know they were about to be found out and thrown in goal.

There are simply too many of them for them to all be good people who have fought the good fight in their own countries against tyranny and tried to fight for freedom and democracy but had to flee to here because their lives and that of their families are at imminent risk of termination if they were caught.

We can see in Europe that immigration of people from the 2nd and 3rd world into the first is planned, deliberate and too well coordinated for it to spontaneous.

Sweden is only a few years away from handing over its sovereignty to Muslims and because of the vast difference in birth rates, most other countries are on course to Muslim majority within 20-25 years.

Guns and bombs are the not the only weapons of war people. Open your eyes to whats going on in the world.

Lots of complaints but not much in the way of solutions. During the last labour government we had 50,000 asylum seekers arrive by boat. What's more this was increasing rapidly and if it hadn't been brought to a halt by a tough policy we would have been inundated by hundreds of thousands by now if not millions. If that had happened there would have been such a backlash from the Australian public that we would probably have withdrawn from the refugee convention and cancelled our already generous asylum program. What's more, many more thousands would have died at sea on their way here.
I'm sure conditions are tough in these camps, but they can always choose to return home or to a third country.
I would question the credentials of this author who seems to suggest that HIV is a tropical disease.
As far as homosexual sex is concerned, this remains illegal in many parts of the world. Should we therefore offer asylum to all the worlds homosexuals?

Universal health care is a punishment that Australians suffer.

The author, being a doctor from the AMA Mafia, wants to cast her net wider.

Haven't the pirate Australian government done enough damage already?
You have been cruel to those refugees (or whatever they are) long enough.
Just let them go!

And to be decent, they also deserve financial compensation for their kidnap at sea, incarceration and torture.
It would be at least $10M each, with which they could go anywhere in the world to receive whatever medical treatment THEY want.

I agree we should continue to oppose asylum seekers coming to Australia in dodgy boats, as the drownings were awful.

However, those that are already here, and in those camps on Manus Island and Nauru should be swiftly processed and either sent back to their homelands if not genuine refugees, or else sent to the nearest safe refugee camps to go to the back of the queues for resettlement.

They should not be left to rot in those Island jails for years, costing our country millions of dollars to house and feed, and to provide medical care and legal assistance.
The current politicians need to grow some balls and just settle these people somewhere right now.

Agree with you Susie for once, isn't it great we have essentially none in detention now instead of the last Labor / Green regime's crimes against humanity.
