Does diversity mean everywhere has to be the same? : Comments

By Alan Davies, published 4/4/2016

As I’ve discussed before, what proponents of this view don’t get is that while big cities provide greater diversity (and are rightly lauded for it), they also provide more opportunities for specialisation.

Any positives coming out of dehumanizing big cities has been made obsolete by things like a fibre to the home NBN and very fast trains. And only decentralisation holds any measure of normal congenial social development.

Simply put, we the people don't exist so that money hungry developers can squeeze more of us into confined spaces/postage stamp sized blocks. And great places for no go ghettos and the drug trade to flourish!

And entirely unnecessary in a land as big and empty as Australia! Similarly we aren't slaves to a mindless economy, which instead needs to be changed to serve the needs of the people, all of them! Ditto forward planning!

Large cities such as London, New York, Silicon Valley are major sources of ideas, innovation, artistic endeavour, productivity and economic growth. They allow for myriads of synergistic interactions which are not available in smaller places. They are magnets for millions. The spin-offs from such cities are of great value to the world. And this is never, ever, brought about by government planning or social engineering, it is a product of the choices of individuals and the interactions between them. The attempts by local councils to micro-manage city development to achieve perceived beneficial outcomes will almost always detract from this, they arise from people of limited perspective and understanding whose self-importance is threatened by the success of those whom they don’t understand and can’t control. Smaller government is the only answer.
