I trust that Greg Sheridan’s book will be read as giving a more rounded view of Tony Abbott’s student days than David Marr’s essay did. Those interested in the criticism of David Marr’s article that Quarterly Essay refused to publish may find it at:

Yet another love letter to Abbott. Yawn.

Chris C's memories align closely with my own - graduating from UNSW in 1972. I cannot however claim to be as close to the action.

Carz & plantagenet, well you may get all you wanted & more from Malcontent Turnbull.

"imacentristmoderate"
Looks like you're a trojan horse, Abbott-faithful, conservative, only masquerading as a centrist moderate. Turnbull is certainly more centrist and moderate than Pell's man Abbott. Posted by plantagenet, Monday, 5 October 2015 3:25:39 PM

plantagenet, Tony Abbott is a centrist moderate, being an enlightened, conservative christian, both economically & socially conservative is centrist. Malcontent Turnbull is either a closet communist like you & well left of center, or is a far right Libertarian who is both socially & economically liberal.
Both positions are about the same, but for different reasons. Be proud of what you are & you will get more respect from both your opposition as well as the electorate in general. Posted by imacentristmoderate, Monday, 5 October 2015 4:09:26 PM

Welcome to OLO :)
Cheers Poida (socially & economically liberal) -this is the left wing or closet communist position hidden by clever wording. ad hominem, play the man & not the ball when you are clearly losing the debate. Q, what else should we expect from a closet communist propagandist? Posted by imacentristmoderate, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 2:17:28 PM

Dear imarightwingnutjob
With your quote: "Malcontent Turnbull is either a closet communist like you & well left of center, or is a far right Libertarian who is both socially & economically liberal." Posted by imacentristmoderate, Monday, 5 October 2015 4:09:26 PM I enjoy being compared favourably with the rich, talented and famous, Rhode scholar Turnbull. Did I tell you I have dashing good looks and a good swimmer? :) Poida https://youtu.be/vpS31FJO8_o Posted by plantagenet, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 2:33:06 PM

plantagenet, economic conservative = private enterprise capitalism with smaller, simpler government & tax + protection of locally owned businesses from UN-fair foreign competition.
economic liberal = free enterprise capitalism with smaller, simpler government & tax + NO protection of locally owned businesses from UN-fair foreign competition. (this policy was introduced by comrade Whitlam to reduce the LNP support base) glad i could clear that up you foolish one. Posted by imacentristmoderate, Tuesday, 6 October 2015 4:35:54 PM

RIP Abbott 2013-1955.
Yes Abbott is at his "best" in the rough and tumble of venom politics. Too bad he failed to be a democratic Prime Minister.
The review's coverage of religious influences is very relevant to Abbott, though not to more enlightened Australian society.
One only hopes that the religious Abbott (as new Ambassador to the Vatican) on Pell's knee can be given a smack.
