Australia has excessive protections for its kangaroos : Comments

By Brendan O'Reilly, published 21/9/2015

Besides causing road accidents, kangaroos are also without a doubt the greatest single cause of unwanted grazing pressure on Australian crops and pastures, and probably exceed bushfire as the biggest single cause of damage to agricultural fencing.

Kangaroo meat producers need to do a better job marketing their product.

Kangaroo meat is high in protein and low in fat (about 2%). Kangaroo meat has a very high concentration of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) when compared with other foods. CLA has been attributed with a wide range of health benefits including anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetes properties, in addition to reducing obesity and atherosclerosis.

Wild kangaroos require no extra land or water for farming, produce little methane, live natural free-range lives, eat organic food, and are killed humanely.

It's also delicious. But for some reason it isn't anywhere near as popular as less healthy and environmentally friendly choices like beef and lamb. Maybe the kangaroo people should get Sam Kekovitch to do an ad for them.

Kangaroos were here a damn long time before cattle and farmers and fences.
Leave `em alone.
At least they naturally control their population. Unlike Homo Sapiens.

oh dear, Kangaroos can be shot by shooters and by farmers with a permit.

The number are estimated each year and around 7-10% are allocated for culling. What the author doesn't mention is the distribution of Kangaroos. In fact for a lot of marginal land the farmer would be better off farming the Kangaroos.
I think the author has been speaking to a few too many scorched earth farmers that will or want to kill just about any native animal that enters their land. Eagles, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, even parrots.

If a farmer believes they have too many kangaroos on their land then they have evidence based methods of dealing with it. They can get a shooter in or they can seek a permit themselves. The fact that some other countries have different laws can be helpful why restrict to the countries nominated.

a Permit is good as you would hope there is a level of training that comes with it. Most people are hopeless at identifying the correct target species.
As a farmer what we don't need is more city cowboys coming out and shooting the place to bits.

Kangaroos are not pests. The human animal uses the term to justify what it wants. Kangaroos live with the planet , they can even control their reproductive cycle to suit conditions.
So who are the pests? I think humans.
The kangaroos might the right to life as well.

The rains come and there is a boom in the kangaroo population. Then comes the dry and they die in their thousands. Boom and bust.

There is no good reason why any properly licensed person shouldn't be allowed to take advantage and hunt for meat for the table. The same applies to rabbits, ducks, pigs and deer.

Where it is available, it is criminal to allow so much first class protein to be left to rot.

80% plus of Queensland is presently suffering drought. Here, from earlier in the season,

Of course roos should be taken for meat and for leather products too.

When a NSW farmer gets a permit to cull 'roos on his property then the carcasses must be tagged and left to rot, not even to be used for dog food.
Likewise road killed ones, it is an offence to cut a steak off the 'roo that just caused $1,000 damage to the car, it too must be left to rot.

Coles are doing an okay job of selling Kangaroo, by having a "game" section in their supermarkets. The Macro Meats' Kangaroo Meatballs are very good, along with the wild Camel Burgers and legs of Goat.

There are so many misconceptions about our national symbols. Nobody knows just how many kangaroos there are in Australia, and some are already extinct - or threatened. As comparing them to cattle, the grazing pressure of kangaroos is minimal compared to livestock! In fact, kangaroos contribute to dispersion of seeds, soil fertilization, consume little, and their feet are gentle on the land, unlike cattle.
The danger from kangaroos is because of the massive number of vehicles in Australia, crossing their habitat, without consideration for wildlife. Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinctions in the world, and the resentment and hatred of kangaroos is an evil, Colonial mentality that should have been eradicated by the 21st century!

Kangaroos do not live on fresh air. Informed experts put a kangaroos on a par with two sheep in terms of the quantum they eat.

Our rate of mammal extinction in this country largely reflects the effects of species introduced a century or more ago, that have gone feral (domestic cats, rabbits, foxes etc). It has little to do with current human activity.

Remember the advice of John Howard. "Relaxed but alert" Phone ASIO.

Federal Police instructions:
"We’ve explained how to respond to attacks by mountain goats and wolves, but how do you defend yourself against a kangaroo?

Walk away sideways. The best defense is to keep a safe distance and try to create a barrier between yourself and the beast. Even holding up a large tree branch can be helpful. If the kangaroo approaches, turn your body sideways, exposing a narrow profile to the animal and protecting your face and organs. Raise your hands and lean your head away from the animal to minimize the chances of being scratched across the face by the kangaroo’s nasty claws. Retreat, but do not turn your back and run. A kangaroo can easily chase you down, kicking as it hops.

Act submissive: Crouch down, avoid eye contact, and back away. Swallow your pride and let out a short, low cough or grunt—that’s how kangaroos admit inferiority to a more powerful male. Females are smaller and somewhat less formidable than males, but attacks by female kangaroos have also caused grievous human injury.
If the animal insists on a fight, your best move is to curl up into a ball and wait for help. You don’t stand much of a chance in a toe-to-toe standoff with a rampaging kangaroo, which can swipe at you with clawed hands or deliver powerful kicks to your abdomen while supporting itself on its tail. A kangaroo’s foot claws are sharp enough to slice open a human abdomen.

. Even trained kangaroos aren’t above fighting dirty: Many of the man vs. beast matches ended when the kangaroo delivered an unexpected kick to its opponent’s groin."

If you have a gun with you you can always shoot an attacking 'roo, however you have to be carrying the gun for a legal purpose, not for self defence as that's illegal as is hunting kangaroos; even though there's millions of them.

There's talk of steel nets around schools and chopper flights. Buses may need first aid kits in the bush.

Increasing shark attacks are caused by fast food replacing fish and chips. Roo and chips is the answer.

Kangaroo grazing is listed as a threatening process under federal legislation as they are eating some plant species so heavily that they (the plants) are at risk of extinction. Conversely, with the removal of Aboriginal hunting of kangaroos in most agricultural areas, kangaroo numbers are in places at all time high levels.

While farming of kangaroos in the agricultural sense is not possible due to a number of factors (they remain wild animals under almost all circumstances), they nonetheless can be humanely harvested by licensed shooters and their meat used for human consumption. To replace cloven-hoofed, exotic species of stock with kangaroos is entirely feasible, if only the animal rights do-gooders withdrew their patently false claims about kangaroos being a threatened species, closing markets such as Russia to kangaroo meat.

Putin banned roo shooting because of false claims he was endangered in Ukraine. The rebels made a simple mistake about Malaysian planes having the flying kangaroo.

Roo meat should be a premium meat in Australia and on the world market. It would be too were it not for the misinformation being deliberately spread by unethical outfits like PETA and the Greens 'Protest' Party.

Likewise, saltwater crocodiles are booming and do not need to have small fortunes wasted on rangers 'rescuing' individual animals. Crocs are spreading South past Rockhampton in Queensland and threaten valuable domestic tourism in those centres.

What about tasty, healthy roo pies in school tuckshops?

What about Australia developing an international reputation for quality roo and crocodile skin goods, such as shoes and handbags, manufactured in Australia?

How about it.
China could import 5000 tons of roo and croc and land them back here as embroidered plaited 2 tone multi-purpose flashing strobe zip-ups with 3D phone movies at half the price.
