Of flags and national anthems : Comments

By Max Wallace, published 18/8/2015

There is a precedent. The Australian national anthem was changed from God Save the Queen to the boring but secular Advance Australia Fair in 1984.

Why do secularists always assume that all Christians are fundamentalists? All Muslims do not support Isis. All secularists are not like Stalin or Mao or Hitler or Pol Pot. It is as though 2000 years of theological investigation does not exist. Yet all the great universities of the world have libraries full of such investigations. Can they all be assumed to be superstitious and harmful for life of the mind?

This article is absurdly biased. Have we forgotten that the WWII came to us curtesy of the secularists. Have we forgotten that the original universities and hospitals came to us curtesy of the Church? This is a hate filled witch hunt that demonises the faith that arose around the gentle Galilean.

Diogenes argued that we should all be citizens of the world - 'humanity'. I do agree.

The elephant in the room is the very existence of flags and anthems, promoting the poison of nationalism.

The original purpose of flags is to identify the armies at war.
While war is sometimes inevitable, is the aggression of militarism something we want to remember and revere even in times of peace?

---

Dear Gerry,

Being a "citizen of the world" is way bigger than 'humanity'.

To quote Diogenes: "Humans have complicated every simple gift of the gods" and "human beings live artificially and hypocritically and would do well to study the dog".

Sells: all Churches are nothing more than groups of people with a shared common belief; not those who as ever seek to control them/speak for them and in their name/revise their teachings; so eventually, it bears little resemblance to what the Gentle Galilean taught; and indeed, went to some lengths with homespun homilies; to prevent others revising everything he taught; and at times to make it mean almost the opposite to his plain speaking (verily verily, truly truly I say unto you) candor! [The Church's charity comes from her bulging coffers but from her many devotees, not those who seek as always to exercise control of every aspect of life, including (oops) what they think!]

Given he knew most of his audience would have been entirely illiterate and easily confused by riddles!

Yuyustu: you've never had it so Ruff, ruff!

"Citizens of the world". What rot! People can't even get along with their fellow countrymen, let alone people who don't speak the same language or have the same culture.

"The Australian national anthem was changed from God Save the Queen to the boring but secular Advance Australia Fair in 1984."

And soon to "Arrival" by Abba.
There's no words, so no "God" or political bias.
But everyone knows the tune.

"And, of course, the Australian flag should be changed too"

Of course.
It's so self-evident you don't even need to present an argument why.

I think it's perfect.
We are the "Britain of the Southern hemisphere".

And one day, we'll probably unite with NZ (in self-defense of the only European societies in the region), so similar flags will be irrelevant.
Yes, we will. "Of course".

What an emotive bit of claptrap, by someone who obviously hates our country, & probably has an axe to grind, or can see a bob in it for them.

Rather than trying to turn my country into a better place for Muslims to live, I suggest you go join the other smarties, like Malcolm Turnbull, take over Fraser Island, & start your own country. Just leave us out of it.

Correction: the Church's charity, comes not from her bulging coffers, but from her devotees.
