Researching public policy and public administration: are Australian academics on the right track? : Comments

Australian-based researchers are in danger of losing their way, and the current preoccupations of research-funding agencies and of universities are making the problem worse.

Excellent article. Australian researchers of public policy and public administration are operating within a research dissemination system dominated by the USA and the UK and widely accepted by universities and funding bodies. Greater effort needs to be placed on contextual research and communication of the value that is generated by cutting edge research to Australia and beyond. Australian researchers should also conduct more joint research with scholars in our region and with key stakeholders beyond their peers. We also need a new narrative to create a culture in public policy and foreign policy research on the importance of basing public and foreign policy on evidence.

My discussions with professors indicate that post-Nelson they have to get too much "consultancy" money from government agencies to be able to think and publish "independently".
