Dear David,

Around 1967, Israel was practically facing the Soviet Union, a formidable power unlike their Arab proxies. Even then, Russia stopped its direct attacks on Israel after several of its best fighter jets were brought down by Israeli pilots.

Now there is no Soviet Union, there is peace with Egypt and Jordan and Syria is torn down and its chemical weapons being collected. A few Palestinians can be defeated even by Israel's military brass band and Israel developed the best weapons in the world, not only nuclear chemical and biological, but also such robotic fighting machines that even the USA has not.

Israel still faces one serious danger, which is nuclear Iran (and its Hezbollah proxy), but it has nothing to do with the Arabs (Iranians are not even Arabs), or with any territorial dispute: Iran simply never forgave Israel for supporting the Shah!

I was not claiming that Australia faces wars or terror, but it faces the constant threat of fires (and cyclones and floods in the north): which is worse - humans or the elements, is hard to tell. No region on this planet is free of dangers.

Inasmuch as Christianity and Islam rely on the Torah/Old-testament, their foundations are unstable. Christianity however, concentrates mainly on Jesus' added value and does not call for national identity. In fact it is seen by many as a revolt against Jewish racism, having accepted all "gentiles" as equal.

Many of the Hindu scriptures were kept as oral traditions for thousands of years and it seems that later ornamental additions were made to the Puranas. Yet their purpose was not as a factual historical text, but as analogies to the internal struggles within one's soul and one's experiences during meditation. In any case, they do not promote nationalism as does the Torah and old testament.

Interestingly, archaeologists lately discovered that Shri Krishna was a real historical person: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CbTyxy1MWo
