Julia Gillard's $1bn jobs package is nothing more than thinly veiled protectionism.

Genevieve,

You could have stopped after the first paragraph.

“Julia Gillard's $1bn jobs package is nothing more than thinly veiled protectionism. As with most policies released by the current Government, the rhetoric outweighs the actual benefit”.

This same comment “the rhetoric outweighs the actual benefit”, also applies to Border Protection, NBN, Gonski Review, Mining Tax, Health Reform, Pink Batts, NDIS, School Halls, CO2 Tax, Cattle Exports, Tax Reform, Freedom of Speech, Human Rights, Education Reform, National Economics/Debt and Budget Surplus.

It seems a bit unfair to pick on the “jobs package”, especially since as with all the other ALP policy bubbles, we need to be fair and give it at least a couple of weeks to fail

The author is repeating the mantra that led to the GFC.

People interested in how a government achieves what should be its aim, the well being of the citizens, needs to read some of John Ralston Saul's work, or read the blogs at New Economic Perspectives rather than swallow the nonsense that flows from right wing/neo-liberal think tanks.

The role of such think tanks is to peddle the propaganda that what is good for business is good for every one with the real aim being, "Taking the Risk out of Democracy" and minimizing real freedom, liberty, and the ability to think clearly.

Inferior government regulation leads to fraud and Gresham's Law comes into play. Gresham Law is that, without strong regulation, rogue, control fraud businesses force decently operated businesses to the wall. That is what happened with the American banking system.

Presently, that paragon of the free market, the USA, is one of the worst countries of the world for anyone not in the top 10%. A German study of social justice measures in the 31 OECD countries rated the USA 27th, only ahead of Greece, Chile, Mexico and Turkey.

Coincidentally, the top six in the rankings were the less religious (more ethical?) northern European countries.

Anyone who is interested in what things are like for USA citizens at present should read the article at;
http://www.alternet.org/economy/9-economic-facts-will-make-your-head-spin?page=0%2C1&akid=10094.1085576.MxFySG&rd=1&src=newsletter798478&t=4&paging=off

So much for the benefits of propaganda and Americanisation guided by think tanks funded by tax deductible corporate expenditure and the absence of (1) prosecutions for fraud (2) adequate government regulation and (3) wise macro economic management by an uncorrupted political system.

If the American dollar wasn't a reserve currency, and the currency of international trade, the USA would be a real basket case.

It really is a remarkable record of abject failure: surely you have to go back to the McMahon and Whitlam years to see so many bright hopes on the government's part demolished by cruel reality so thoroughly, so soon. What went wrong? Is it that nobody in the government actually understands basic economics, or is it that they understand it but despise it as a crude materialistic tool, ill befitting a group so gifted with a comprehensive supernatural understanding of Life, the Universe and Everything? Inquiring minds want to know -- if only to stop it happening again.

Looking at Ms Georges website, it is good to see those young faces that appear to have got a job; but what about the mature worker in their fifties, where are they, or do you have to be pretty and young to be considered by Ms Georges employment agency!
With respect to Ms George lack of industrial history, it was the union of workers who fought for the rights of a fair wage, a safe working environment, the 38 hour week and ceasing the exploitation of vunerable workers
Ms George what are you doing for the unemployed, other than espousing liberal rhetoric, and banking those high fees paid by employers to your business.

A position for a volunteer Street Stall attentent for 20 hours ? That'll really give an unemployed family man a lot of hope.
The problem in Australia as it is in all other "developed" countries is that there are just too many free-loaders. Let's cut their entitlement/benefits/demands & we'll have an instant improvement. The silly unions always go for higher pays for their members. No wonder we're getting deeper & deeper into the crap. What unions should be doing is reducing the pays of the high earners on the public payroll. If someone thinks they're worth more money then let them go out & earn it with their skills & knowledge in private enterprise. The public purse is there to provide employment for the masses. It is not a limit less money pit for career mongers especially the pointless ones. To the unions & their greedy members I say stop draining our coffers you're not worthy of being kept any longer, you've proven your uselessness.

You don't understand what you're talking about and you're contradicting yourself.

You're the one who's in favour of government control of the banking system, remember? Well? Who do you think is controlling the supply of money and credit?

Thank you all for your comments! It's an important discussion that I wish more people were having.

Kipp - I just want you to know that OneShift caters to all peoples, regardless of age - in fact we have successfully matched a 78yr old with an employer . OneShift works by allowing businesses to post free ads for jobs on our website.Businesses then pay a small fee to connect with three (3) possible employees out of all their matches, with a further nominal cost for additional connections. From there its over to the job seeker and the employer. The reason we have a predominance of younger people is more due to the fact that young people seek part time or casual work in larger numbers than older people. This is due to various reasons such being a student etc.

Foyle - OneShift Jobs is not about espousing right wing ideology. Had this come from a coalition govt we would have been equally critical.I don't have the word allowance to go through all of your discussion points re: the US but feel free to email me at nat@oneshift.com.au
