Making the most of the seat at the table : Comments

By Melissa Conley Tyler and Eleanor Pahlow, published 26/11/2012

Australia will need to have a clear vision and agenda during its term, identifying a small number of core issues to push consistently throughout the Council’s work so that it is not simply reacting to immediate crises.

Ok, so Australia has secured its place on the UN Security Council for a couple of years.

Good.

Yes we should carefully consider how to make the most of this opportunity, and take forward the right priorities.

But what are these priorities?

I’d argue that they should NOT be arms control and the protection of civilians. We should be looking at the picture a bit more broadly.

Security has got everything to do with a sustainable world, in which the human population is not continuously growing and the resource base and environment are not being continuously degraded.

THIS needs to be our priority!

And Bob Carr is just the man to take this sort of thing forward, with a vengeance, and a great understanding of the issues behind it.

A sustainable future, which includes stabilising population, improving the lives of millions of desperately poor.. and getting governments to stop pandering to vested-interest continuous-growth-mongers and start behaving responsibly - THIS is the sort of priority we need to take to the UN!

What nonsense!

Everyone knows that Australia's role on the Security Council will be to vote for everything that advances the racist, imperial and economic interests of Israel and the U.S.

Julia should change our flag to better represent this unfortunate reality.
