Good bile and bad: tolerating Alan Jones : Comments

By Binoy Kampmark, published 3/10/2012

What is peculiar about this particular attack on Jones, as deserved as it might be seen in some quarters, is why it did not happen earlier.

Does anyone remember BA Santamaria, who occupied the same position as Jones about thirty years ago? Like Jones, he catered to the lowest level of ignorance; listeners and viewers who were too poorly educated to even realise it, and who subsequently imagined the failure of their own ideas and suggestions were due to conspiracies and jealousy rather than their manifest incompetence. And he managed to destroy the Labor Party for two decades in the process. People like Santamaria and Jones are simply out to exploit the Dunning-Kruger Syndrome.

But the world IS getting smarter, although it doesn't always seem that way, and people like Jones and his contemporaries in the media are on borrowed time.

And that petition is up to 100,000 signatures by now.

Jon J. "catered to the lowest level of ignorance; listeners and viewers who were too poorly educated to even realise it, and who subsequently imagined the failure of their own ideas and suggestions were due to conspiracies and jealousy rather than their manifest incompetence."

What makes you so sure that your world view is the right and proper one, and that those of us who might think differently from you (usually based on a lot of real world experience with life) are to be described in the terms you use? And it is worth noting that folk like me are usually the ones that have paid taxes all their adult lives, in effect supporting the public servants and those on welfare. Why shouldn't we have a say?

This is a complex world filled with people of widely differing views on many issues. The essence of a democracy is to elect governments that deliver for the whole population, as best they can.

I find that I don't agree with Alan Jones on some issues, but on other issues he does a good job of asking the tough questions, and holding the government accountable. He has a valid function, a valid role.

Even an anus has a valid and important function, but that doesn't stop it from being a hole that crap comes out of.

Jones is an offensive oaf but so is Kyle Sandilands and he still gets to keep his job. Offensive oafs seem quite popular in some sections of the community. Why single out Alan Jones for the chop when there is so much competition?

Cheers,

Tony

...On the swift heels of "Alcibiades", where to now Alan? Certainly not into the “loving arms” of Rene Rivkin!
