By John Zalcberg, published 29/8/2011

Medical research funding doesn't need to be increased, just prioritised and directed to the most effective areas.

Great article, about time medical research funding was "triaged".

I am really struggling in finding the actual point of this article unless it is interpreted as a advertisement.

It seems to say 'Stop asking for more funding, instead give more of the funding available to innovators...like us".

No good reason is actually given on what funding rates are appropriate or why funding should be either increased or decreased, although from history that appears to be directed by political whim.

I'm sure that the good researchers at the Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group are great at what they do. However research is getting more expensive and there are far more tools becoming available to do very good research, such as short-read genomic sequencing, and they cost more money. In fact, it is innovation that appears to be expensive in the short-term but more economical in the long-term.

Are you proposing that the government tries to pick innovative 'winners'? That is what they have been trying to do for decades and almost invariably fail dismally. Research is inherently a high-risk activity. Don't let politicians do the 'triage', they always get it wrong.
