The assassination of key a Karzai advisor does not bode well for Australian withdrawal from Afghanistan

A top notch article.

Which recounts the rolling disasters that are occurring in Afghanistan regardless of a Coalition presence or not.

We are, of course, there due to American pressure to be there. Australia provides a little international legitimacy to US strategic aims which are unrelated to human rights protection.

Coalition boots on the ground are guaranteeing the Taliban will to fight the current infidel occupiers.

Australia has not yet contributed sufficient blood and treasure (of the scale of Canada - more than 150 dead) to be allowed by the US to withdraw.

When all the Western forces have, at last, withdrawn Afghanistan will again revert to Pakistan's increased influence, with the US, in turn, influencing Pakistan with massive aid/bribe money.

Business as usual will return to the region - as though the Coalition fought and died there for nothing (South Vietnam...again).

If anything, the fact that there is still so much strife in the country after 11 years of us changing the government (itself a disaster), is reason enough we should leave.
It demonstrates that the country is not capable of abandoning its old ways and we are wasting out time (and our servicemen's lives) by still being there.

Why do we seem to have forgotten the reason we are in Afghanistan?

On 11 September 2001, 19 hijackers trained in al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan hijacked four domestic US air-flights and crashed two into the World Trade Center causing the Twin Towers and Building 7 to collapse completely. They crashed a third air flight into the Pentagon and came close to crashing a fourth into the US Capitol Building. Almost 3,000 residents of the US lost their lives on that awful day.

The full story of the events of that day can be found in the 9/11 Commission (http://www.9-11commission.gov/) report downloadable as a pdf file (http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/911/report/911Report.pdf - 7.4 MB) from http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/911/report/index.htm .

If Australia and the US were to pull out of Afghanistan before finishing off al Qaeda and their Taliban backers, then what safeguard is their against a repeat of 9/11?

We could probably avoid a repeat of terrorism, funnily enough, by leaving these countries and disengaging ourselves from the middle east (which so far has brought us nothing but misery in itself).
And the Taliban will still be around for decades if we were to continue wasting our time in that country- worse, is that they will continue to pour out into neighbouring countries like Pakistan- which unlike Afghanistan, we would not have the same right of passage.
(after all, I need not remind you which country Bin Laden had REALLY been hiding, this whole time.)

King Hazza, malthusista,

Could you tell us what evidence you have that Islamist terrorists killed almost 3,000 people on September 11?
